1) Brief Update
I put this at the top so you could see what I've been doing since your last visit, and immediately see if you want to read any further.

6/15/03:
- Added test data for CLK Touring Car, Castrol Tom's Supra, GT40, and ZZII (+161.9 miles - 25.2 laps)
Later in the day I did this:
- Added KPH conversions for all MPH figures. (You're welcome PAL users.)
- Added a section on how to set up the car to wheelie.
- Lots of formatting and moving sections around to make it flow better.

2) Introduction
This test was to find out exactly what cars can wheelie. I did this test just because I kept hearing "can _____ wheelie?" and "no way _____ can wheelie?" And I'm the kinda guy who just wants to know the damn answer and I haven't seen one of these yet. I was surprised at what will wheelie and what won't. I ended up spending about 10 hours on this total (from about 10 pm till 8 am)
Just to let you know... I ended up travelling 929.7 total miles around the Test Track on the initial round of testing. (That's 144.58 laps.)

3) The Setup

I put this in here for those of you who haven't seen the wheelie settings before.

Spring Rate F/R = Minimum
Ride Height F/R = Minimum
Front Downforce = Minimum
Rear Downforce = Maximum
ASM = 0 (not sure if this matters, maybe on 4WD)
TCS = 0 (not sure if this matters, maybe on 4WD)
VCD = 10% (4WD vehicles only)

I also put all the LSD settings at 5, but I'm not sure if this affects anything
And you need to adjust the tranny to where you don't shift in the middle of pulling the wheelie. (During the actual raising of the front end) This may require the "tranny trick" where to slide the auto set all the way to the left, then slide final all the way to the right, then slide auto all the way to the right, then slide final to the left until the gears are wide enough. (I usually set it so the 4th gear's line is cut in half on the screen, that way 4th ends at 240-280)

4) The Data

Table definitions:
H.P. = Eh... if you don't know go play Cruisin' The World
Y/N = Did it wheelie? Yes or No
Max speed: Eh... as fast as I could get the bastard to go
Liftoff MPH = the speed at which the wheelie began (approx.)
T.C. Lap = Best Test Course Lap time
*=HP is not at optimum due to breakin period or too many miles
Notes:
If an "x" was given for the decimal place in the max speed then I did not take it to the max speed test as I could clearly read the digital speedo.
KPH - I used Online Conversion's calculator to convert MPH to KPH. If there was an "x" as a decimal for the MPH figure I added 1 KPH to the figure to account for the unknown decimal place and then used an "x" for the KPH's decimal figure.
Impreza LM Race Car and ZZII: These cars almost wheelied at the end of the strait, but there wasn't enough room. I could detect no lift but they quickly gained 10 MPH before they hit the wall. The mini-wheelie lasted for under a second.

And again, if I missed any cars please feel free to contact me through the various methods available to let me know. Also, if you have gotten a car to wheelie that I was unable to please send me a replay and your settings and I will do my best to wheelie it.

5) Car Selection
During the initial test I tested all cars that had over 900 HP with oil change and full upgrades. They must also have had adjustable front and rear downforce settings. (If I missed any please PM/Post which ones.) I now need to lower the HP requirement due to the CLK Touring car's ability to wheelie at 833 HP. Hopefully I'll get this new round of testing done by 6/17/03.

6) Testing Methods/procedures
All vehicles were given full upgrades, oil change, and T8 tires (super soft/sticky). I then took the car to the Test Course in the "Run and Settings" section of "Home" to get the tranny set up as best I could and to get the Test Course lap time. Then after I was happy with the transmission settings I took the car to the Max Speed test and ran it backwards for 1-3 laps to get the speed as high as I could.

7) Proof
This is for you hardcore non-believers out there. After testing each car I saved its settings and its best lap replay from Test Course. There is also a game save with all the cars tested after the tests were conducted.
Go here to download the .zip file.

8) Test Update History
6/15/03:
- added 4 new cars to the test; Castrol Supra, GT40 Race, CLK Touring, and ZZII.
- converted the "Max Speed" and "Wheelie" to KPH for PAL users.
- did quite a bit of formatting on the post as well as the download page, both still need more

6/13/03:
- Original Post

9) Permissions
This document is the intellectual property of Tom Collins A.K.A. Jaster83. Don't be an ass and steal it. The only place that this should be seen is at GTPLanet.net forums (as of 6/15/03). I plan on making an HTML page and putting it on my site, and allowing GTPlanet.net to have it at their site as well. (If they want it.)

you dont need to be a mod to know that HP means Horse Power (~750 watts) anyway...everyone knows mods know nothing (j/k)

Jaster, this is an amazingly good experiment...well done, i'll try some of this when i get home..

Thank you both, and I said "Iunno maybe a mod knows" cuz if you don't know what HP means maybe you need to ask the mod if you're on the right forum 8)
Plus every post I have to make at least 1 reference to "the mods". I want them to know that I know they're out there, reading all the posts I make. I feel for them since most of my posts are composed of utter nonsense that spans 4 pages. (Example 1 Example 2)

(It was originally "H.P.= If you gotta ask you're a ****ing moron." But I thought that was a bit harsh. )

Harsh but fair... :D

Have a crack at the CLK-DTM...

Thanks for the feedback, greatly appreciated. I really want this to be the ultimate wheelie... err wouldn't call it a FAQ or guide... but um... the final word on if a car can wheelie or not.

Chopshadez, when you say GT40 do you mean the Toyota GT-One or the Ford GT40? The GT40 wasn't in the experiment, but if you say it's able to wheelie I'll try it out.

I didn't know the ZZII had adjustable front/rear, I'll check it out soon (give me a day or so). Are there any other non-sticker'd up cars that have adjustable front/rear and over 850 HP without oil change? If so let me know and I'll add them to the test.

Famine, I'm not familiar with "CLK-DTM" do you mean the Mercedes CLK Touring car? Sorry, but that's the only car I can find on my... err list, that has CLK in it...

So to be tested are:
ZZII and CLK-DTM, and GT40 unless chopshadez made a typo. (It's coo', I get them confused too... they're both ugly and they've both got GT#... and did I mention they're both FUGLY?) Oh, and the Castrol Tom's Supra, I missed it in my initial test and just realized it a few hours ago.

--Jaster

CLK-DTM is the "real" name of the CLK Touring Car. I just couldn't be bothered typing the whole gibberish. DTM stands for "Deutsche Tourenwagen Master", FYI.

Wow, that's great work Jaster...I'm also surprised at some of the cars that wheelied!!!

ah, thank you Famine, I guessed correctly then :D (mwahahaha unrivaled powers of deduction)

the esperante wheelied? mind giving me your gear settings and a replay if you've got one? (NTSC)

and yeah viper, i was especially surprised by the denso supra, since I've put over 2000 miles on my other one and never thought to try to wheelie it. I was just putting down the test course (at 210 MPH lol... putting) and all of a sudden I realize I'm doing 300 and i'm like "CRAP IT WHEELIED". and it was actually one of the easier ones to wheelie.

-Jaster

for those of us who don't have x/shark ports, what kinds of settings do we apply to cars we want to wheelie, is it the same as for the escudo wheelie?

Yes, exactly the same as the kudo.

Spring Rate F/R = Minimum
Ride Height F/R = Minimum
Front Downforce = Minimum
Rear Downforce = Maximum

if it's 4WD then put VCD at 10%

I also put all the LSD settings at 5.

I should probably add that into the original eh?

--Jaster

I tried that out, but I still can't get that ZZII to wheelie up. I need a faster top speed than 238 to beat that R390 on test course.

Just tested the
Castrol Supra (yes)
GT40 (HELL NO it don't wheelie, slow POS)
CLK Touring Car (holy shiot it wheelies)
ZZII (it nearly wheelies, it starts to lift at 237,but when the front tires reach the ground it's not putting enough power down to keep pushing it up in the air, but I got it to pop from 237 to 250.1, tiny, tiny wheelie)

I'll add all the info to the main thread after I get done checking all my subscriptions and upload the new zip with the replays, settings, and game save to my website. (An hour? could be 4-5 if I write anything philosophical or opinionated :D )

--Jaster

What did I tell you about the CLK? :D

If I remember rightly it's a fairly low-speed wheelie too.

yup, 200 MPH, if it was 240 I don't think it would make it. Like I said I'm gonna stick it all up there in as soon as I empty my damn e-mail (over 100 new messages... not to mention all the ones I've let build up, I've deleted 200+ already... goddamn)

You know any other cars that wheelie that I haven't tested? (The fact that the CLK has 798 HP before oilchange screws me over cuz now I have to test everything above that... it'll be a while, I'm burned out on massive test course laps...)

--Jaster

Updated the list, added 4 cars (Castrol Supra, ZZII, CLK Touring, and GT40)
Also added a column for top speed in KPH and a column for when the wheelie starts in KPH for you PAL users.

I'm going to work on formatting some more, and hopefully start on an HTML version that'll be real pretty. (Pretty is cool.)

It's devoted people like you Jaster83 that keep communities like this alive and interesting. BTW I start falling asleep after 10 minutes on the test course...
Now if I could only break out of Seatle again I could take a crack at crashing my Playstation...

Update: Lots of formatting

Thank you Zev, glad you feel I add to the community. :O

And I've found that the trick on staying awake on Test Course is the same as staying awake on long road trips, just drink lots of caffeine, chew something (gum, pretzels, stuff like that), lean forward in your seat, and listen to music you know so you can sing along. Makes all the difference in the world. (Test course is IMMENSELY boring though, more so than a several hour drive. I HATE test course, especially now. HATE it... damn I hate it.)

--Jaster

Wow, great work so far Jaster...nice updating. :)

MuFF, I don't think it'll work with the Beetle mainly because it doesn't have enough "grunt" to make a wheelie.

breaking out of seattle is easy, i can do it 50% of the time i try now with an escudo or F1 car.
i tried the wheelie in a toyota GTone road car with max mods and although i constantly had sparks flying out of the back it didn't wheelie. (one less for you to test i guess :odd: )

Holy crap, this is an amazing compilation, Jaster. Just one question, though: How did you crack the minute mark with the GT-One Race? I only managed 1'01.000 exactly with the Race, at about the same speed as that.

And how the hell do you calculate exact speeds?

It tells you your speed when you do it in the high speed run...;)
