To enhance my knowledge of motorcycles, I'd like to open this thread to see how many motorcycle fans we have on GTPlanet. You can talk about some of the best motorcycles in World Superbike, AMA Superbike, NHRA Pro Stock Bike racing, flat track racing, motocross, supermoto, or one of my favorites, MotoGP. Also up are stuff about sidecars, the Isle of Man race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans Moto, and that sort of thing. If there's already a good discussion on motorcycles, then my apologies. Just leave this topic left for dead. Also talk about some of the best motorcyclists to ever race on two wheels. Help expand my motorcycle knowledge, plus let's do motorcycle talk.

I guess the only motorcyclist I know best is Freddie Prince Jr, who won the 250cc and 500cc championships in the same year. Of course, Valentino Rossi is one of the best in MotoGP right now, having won for Yamaha in 2004.

Simple huh? Let's see how this goes. Just consider this as a general thread on all types of motorcycle racing.

i'm quite a big fan of two-wheel action, especially Motogp. Back in the Doohan glory days, everyone watched an Aussie from the gold coast, kick the whole worlds arse, 5 times over!!

 I"M BACK!!!!!!After a long abcense,I have finally come back and did I miss you all.
My favorite 2 wheel sport is the speed way bikes.Just love to see them throw the bikes sideways on dirt.you can't beat that.

I think you mean Freddie Spencer.

My bad, Roberto! After all, this is why I'm doing this topic for you all. It's to talk two-wheel action so I can eventually understand motorcycle racing better.

As I've learned, MotoGP at Assen is like sportscars to Le Mans or stock cars to Daytona. I've loosely described MotoGP as the Formula One of motorcycle racing in terms of pure racing bikes all going at it with sensational talent. Valentino Rossi. Max Biaggi. Carlos Checa. The "Texas Tornado" Colin Edwards. You know, just to name a few. When it came to the highest class, I sure wished Daijiro Katoh could have been around longer since stepping up to the big bikes, but I sure liked to have seen how far he would go since being out of 250cc.

And I didn't know basketball legend Michael Jordan had a thing for motorcycles.

I have a magazine with a great article about Britten's bikes. That is who you are talking about right?

I'm a fan, though I don't really follow it or any sport for that matter, I just watch it whenever it's on. If you want, check out cycleforums.com they have a section dedicated to sportbike races. My personal favourite used to be Eric Bostrom just because he rode my bike, but now that he's not with Kawi anymore, I just enjoy the show. Isle of Manns has to be my favourite race for the simple reason that you have to be completely insane to race it.

Well, i started riding dirt bikes when i was about 3 years old. My parents bought me a yamaha pw50. I started racing when i was about 4 1/2. Raced just local races when i was younger but when i moved up into the 80cc class i started going to bigger races around the US. I raced till about 3 weeks after my 16th birthday. I got my DL and kinda lost interest in the sport. Girls and movies became more important. That was stupid because motocross broke my bones but girls can be more painful sometimes. (damn those shedevils) J/K. Well i got back into the sport when i was 20 and raced off and on but now i'm just recreation and i race pit bikes. (see pit bike series thread) If you have questions about Motocross in the states i'm your man. 👍

What would you say is the best:

A.) ...superbike in the past?
B.) ...superbike of the present?
C.) ...motorcycle racing manufacturer today?

C: Yamaha is most popular in the states with motocross. Suzuki is making a strong charge in 2005 taking RC on with them. They are all comparable in the stock forms. But i'm a hardcore honda fan. Even though i own YZ 250cc.

GTPlanet, if you'd like to talk about the first MotoGP event in America since 1994, you can with this thread. American racers have had a great showing. I know Nicky Hayden is one of America's best motorcycle racers. And he's proven me right by winning his first-ever pole in America. Of course, America would go nuts if one of the four Americans who qualified won the race outright. I often think of Laguna Seca as the Formula One of motorcycle racing, and some of the world's greatest superbike riders will tear up Laguna Seca, testing corners from the Andretti Hairpin, to the world-famous Corkscrew, and the final very slow corner. As it stands, here's how Americans have faired in qualifying:

1 - Nicky Hayden
5 - Colin Edwards
6 - Mr. Hopkins (John Hopkins, right?)
12 - Kenny Roberts

Can America win on home soil? We're going to find out soon, aren't we?

There's a lot of pressure on the kid, and he's been under-performing with that team. I'm not going to suggest this race is a must-win for #69, but securing a ride with the Repsol HRC team next year would be aided greatly by a win today.

With Rossi and Barros beside him getting away fast will be very important. Nicky's been the fastest all weekend, and ran off 5 consecutive laps in the 1.22.7 - 1.22.9 range. He'll need that consistency all race, I think Rossi, Barros and Bayliss are gonna be on him all race, 1 mistake and I suspect he'll get passed and that'll be it. It's very difficult to overtake at Laguna Seca.

Well now the update. Nicky Hayden was on pole at Laguna Seca, Valentino Rossi was left behind as Colin Edwards moved into second place, and the first MotoGP event in America in over 11 years has this for a podium: an American, an American, an Italian- N. Hayden (first career MotoGP win), C. Edwards, and V. Rossi. So it looks like Nicky Hayden now has a morale boost in being in MotoGP race events.

In terms of the atmosphere, I didn't know if it was an American scene, or a European one. The track had all sorts of motorcycle fans in the stands and on the grass. It was a wonderful race, even more so if you wanted Americans to win it all at Laguna Seca. Well, unwrap Old Glory and fly those American flags in happiness as Hayden and Edwards make it an American 1-2 at Laguna Seca.

Your race reactions and such are welcomed from this point.

I'm glad Nicky won one. The difference between knowing the track and not is obviously a big factor at a place like Laguna Seca with so many elevation changes. It's good for Repsol HRC Honda too. They were well on their way to being humiliated...again.

I just wanted to revive this thread on MotoGP. Nicky Hayden looks to be in pretty good company right now. But Valentino Rossi is still looking to take down Nicky Hayden. Now answer me this. Nicky Hayden is quite a talent, isn't he?

I watch the Superbikes races on Speed if I find them but not that often. The riders I know of are Matt Maldin, Eric Bostrom and his brother ( I can't seem to remember his name ) and I used to know a few others but its been awhile since I last watched a race.

Sorry, but thats wrong. I've watched a doco on Britten and all about his bikes and stuff. He's a kiwi and went over to the US with his bikes and won races.

Hey, I live in Australia and I love watching the MotoGP. Laguna has got to be the best track anywhere in the world (apart from Bathurst here). Its an awesome circuit, and not just because of the corkscrew, its a great track in general. I love watching Nicky Hayden get the back wheel smokin sideways out of corners.

Nicky Hayden just might be on top of the world by season's end. I say that he's the best talent in the series? Make that two Americans. Colin Edwards is a classical talent in MotoGP, not to mention he's one of Texas' own. And you know what? Make that Houston's own Colin Edwards { http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Edwards }! He's a pretty good racer. I sort of remember him in World Superbike back in 2000 or so. This season is all about Nicky Hayden and his #69 Repsol Honda. This guy's from Kentucky and is just a sensational rider. I have GREAT respect for Nicky Hayden. He was good in AMA Superbike, and he just might have a Hall of Fame motorcycle racing career once he hangs it up. He's capable of big things.

Let me make like WWE Announcer Tony Chimel on this one...

"Here is your winner, and the... NEEEEEEEEEW World Champion - Nicky Hayden!!!"

That's right. Valentino Rossi's campaign came to a brutal end when Rossi didn't get to hold onto his Yamaha on Lap 5. Rest assured that he made a Michael Schumacher-type comeback. But it was all for not as Nicky Hayden won the 2006 MotoGP crown. And damn it to hell, I'm proud of Nicky. His stock has risen completely since going from an AMA Superbike Champ to a MotoGP champ. I think he probably would have locked up the championship long ago had it not been for D. Pedrosa.

Depending upon how you feel, it's more of either "I knew he would make a great champion. Now he IS champion," or "yeah! An American kicked the world's asses!" I'm not Mr. Patriot. But he is a sensational talent. Show Nicky Hayden some love here in this thread if you wish. I've given him some love. Why not you?

As a side-announcement, I may plan on making a MotoGP Thread to cover MotoGP. I can't promise I'll cover every race. But what I can do is give you all a chance to share MotoGP.

Like I said before, I am INCREDIBLY proud of Nicky Hayden. I wanted him to lock up at least one MotoGP championship. Now he's done just that. Nothing makes a person happy than to see his/her favorite team or driver win a major title. He's top-notch talent. And for an American to win the title, it's even more satisfying to those who feel national pride is on the line. Now imagine if Scott Speed won either a race or the F1 World Championship. How would we feel now?

But as I always say, I'm a citizen of the world before I'm an American citizen. I just really believed in Nicky Hayden. Now he's on top of the mountain, ready to fight to remain on top of the mountain for the 2007 season. He's got more fight in him than a ravaging bull here in Texas. Or since Nicky Hayden is a Kentucky boy, more fight than a powerful race horse. How else can I say it? I'm proud of the Kentucky Kid (he also calls himself "Trick Daddy" according to the Wikipedia entry on him). How about you?

This motogp season was fantastic to watch! Nicky didn't blow anyone away, but little by little he kept scoring. I wonder what the stat for winning the championship with the fewest wins is? I'd bet he'd be right up there. Its the definition of consistancy.

One thing that's interesting is Valentino, as shown by him congratulating Hayden and in interviews, really respects Hayden as a rider, and has a much different relationship between Hayden compared to Gibernau and Biaggi.

Lets bring some life into this thread. Here are some ideas that everyone might want to add something too.
