This is annoying

Why, when I get an email notification of a new post in a subscribed thread, the link leaves me at some randon place in the middle of the thread, not even on the right page? This happens almost every time.

Because you get the notification the first time someone replies to the thread since you last viewed it. It may well be that many people respond to the thread between the notification being sent and your next visit.

That's not it. It's happened over and over in the same thread for many consecutive replies.

You should only get one notification per thread per visit. I.e. every time you visit the thread, then someone replies, you'll get one, and only one, notification until the next time you visit the thread.

Does that bottom it out? If not, you might want to explain the behaviour in more detail.

In my email today was a notification from yesterday, and yes, there were other replies after it. I understand that part.

But today I've been going around and around in an Opinions forum thread. I post. Then another user replies and I get and email. So I go back to see it by clicking the link. BUT, the link takes me to the same place it took me earlier. This repeats. I go and reply. Someone replies. I click the link and go back to the same place over and over. Does that explain the problem?

And it continues...

I also noticed another thing. When the link dumps me off at the beginning of the thread, clicking on the "go to first unread post" link leaves me about an inch away from where I ended up to begin with. And this is after revisiting the thread numerous times, always being linked to same spot.

Unless you log out of the site, or your session expires after you have not exchanged information with the server for more than 30 minutes, the "jump to newest post since you last visited" link will take you to whatever was the newest post when your current session started, even if more posts have been made during your session. Does that make sense? I have also found this to be quite annoying, especially in a popular thread, and I do believe it has been fixed for the next version of vBulletin.

But now I am having a new problem. I suddenly have to log in every time I return. Thats a first. And I haven't changed any settings on anything.

Well I seem to be automatically logged in when I return through an email link but when I come back through the index page I still have to re-login.
