Did it make your lap times any better? I want a wheel so bad, but I feel like a wheel will be less precise than my controller especially if there is lag and what not.

Plus I would love to have one with a gear box and clutch but I don't have 300+ to drop on a steering wheel for this one game. Any suggestions?

I agree somewhat that using a stick instead of a wheel for steering can be easier when you get used to it (because of near-instant opposite lock), but the fact is there's a massive difference between buttons or triggers and pedals. When I use my pad I usually have to have TCS and maybe even ASM on when I drive a more powerful car; my 620bhp 458 is about the fastest thing I can drive without aids and not spin, but as I'm on the extreme events there's just no way I can drive the 88C-V or NASCARs without aids as the wheels spin far too easily, but with a wheel you can be far more progressive with your controls and there's a million more levels of pressure you can explore if you use pedals, you can even turn ABS off in some cars...!

Not to mention the immersive aspect, of course; you're driving a realistic representation of a car, so why not use the same controls as a real car? That said, the H-pattern shifter and clutch are nice, but not essential to the wheel experience, the Driving Force GT or even a Pro is a great wheel if you don't want to spend loads, I'd estimate the GT at $120 (they're £80 here). I have a Driving Force Pro, picked it up second hand for £30 and it's lasted me 5 years so far and is easy enough to fix when the pedals go funny.

You might find it takes a while to learn to use the wheel (most people can't tell, at first, whether they're supposed to fight the feedback or let it control the car), but once you've gotten used to it it's so much more fun than the pad.

Once you get used to it, you will be faster with a wheel... plus the game is more enjoyable with a wheel.

If you can't stretch to a new G27 maybe you could pick up a 2nd hand G25? If not, then the DFGT is pretty decent wheel wise and good deal cheaper than the G25/7 too.

I hardly ever use the H shifter on mine... particulalry as there doesn't seem to be any advantage to using the clutch in GT5 (paddle shifts are super quick now).

.

I think both can do about the same speeds. But a wheel gives you more presice control and the ability to drive more smooth. At the beginning a wheel can seem very hard to drive with, it takes some getting used to. But it is worth it!

I can recommend both g25 and g27. But I know there are sevral other great wheels out there. Maybe even the new Thrustmaster 500..

The DFGT has paddles doesn't it? I think I might get that one, because even though I'd love for the real clutch and shifter, it'd probably slow me down some. But I can't get over how a wheel would probably make me love the game even more, but I'm not the greatest driver and I can't afford to spare any time of things such as licenses and challenges. Let alone close races.

I think I might try and get the GFGT.

It does, I'm more precise (I wasn't at first but now I'm better) get the Fanatec Carrera ($159.95)

Those reliable and good wheels? Much lag in it? I feel like the lag part is going to be disappointing if I get one.

Lag? I haven't noticed any lag using wheels... I owned a G25 for 2.5 years and that had no lag, I now have a G27 and that has no lag and I bought my nephew a DFGT for his birthday and I didn't notice any lag on that when I set it up for him.

Well I was told with the DFGT there was a little lag with some NFS game, I guess it's different for GT?

I noticed a big deadzone with the G25 on NFS Shift (which was reduced by tweaking the settings), but no lag. On GT games there's only a tiny deadzone (almost un-noticable) and I've never notice any input lag.

Not really it has tiny plastic paddles attached to the wheel instead, about 3inches from the outside of the wheel and mabye an inch square. You would have to see a pic to see what I mean,

It took me a few months to be faster with the wheel.
It took me ages to learn drifting using a wheel.

And a wheel is just 10x more enjoyable :)

It makes the whole game better... It's how it's supposed to play to be honest.

I totally agree with Stotty, having a wheel does help with getting fastest lap times. Also getting training from competing in WRS with all the other GTP members really makes a big difference. Watch for Logitech and Amazon sales, Logitech had a 25% sale a few months ago. Just keep on the watch 👍

I think in your situation, the DFGT is your best bet. Thats what I've had since GT4 and I still love it! I was thinking of buying the G25, but thats probably far in the future. I just cant see myself spending $300 on a new wheel when mine is perfectly fine, aside from the lack of the H Pattern shifter and clutch pedal. The DFGT has "paddle" shift, and also a sequential shifter. I used the sequential a lot in GT4 but I have found a new love for the paddle shift. 2 hands on the wheel and a super quick shift rather than 1 hand on the wheel, and a split second longer shift with the sequential.

Another thing, if you're worried about "instant lock to lock" steering, you can switch between 270 degree steering and 900 degree steering on the fly. This might not be instant, like on a controller but once you get used to the wheel you'll be fine.

The wheel/pedals also make it a lot easier to Left Foot Brake, and to modulate brake and gas accordingly (I left foot brake a lot, especially with AWD cars).
