Because we discussed this a couple of times in the GT5 board, I thought a thread here would be logical. A lot of new members create useless threads instead of using the search function, so how about this:
Members can only create new threads with at least 100 posts (maybe a bit less).
New threads from members with less than 100 posts have to be approved by a mod.
Members with the "New Member" tag can't create new threads.

Just examples, what do you guys think?

Yes, this has been discussed before, and yes, I will eventually implement thread creation restrictions in certain forums. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

What if a brand new member registers with a valid question? As a new member they can't create a thread full stop, meaning they have to make low quality posts so they can get their answer. Possible.

100 posts for topic creation rights is excessive in my opinion. I would say 10 posts is enough for new topics... and would be nice to implement a warning screen whenever they try to create a new topic (and don't have rights to), like "Have you tried using our search feature? blah blah..."

10 is too less, then you get people who will spam or post stupid stuff just to create a thread. Like I said, the 100 was just a example, you could also make 50.

@Jordan: Take your time, I just haven't seen it being discussed here, but all the time in the GT5 board.

Understood, the way I see it, post requirements for topic creation is more symbolical... It tells the member to participate on threads and get used to how things work before creating topics like crazy, so anything more than 10 would feel frustrating at least for me (if I was the new member).

I believe Jordan has stated in the past that this post requirement thingy will only apply to the GT5 forum, in which case would make the wait more bearable.

I've seen a function on other forums, where it automatically searches for the words in your thread title and suggest you read those threads first before posting.

As i new member i feel very guilty about this yet 100 is excessive and 10 is inadequate so how about 55 just to average it out.

I don't usually lurk around the GT5 thread, but I agree with Pro's idea of mods approving them threads.. and for New Members, there's a warning sign ev'ry time they want to make a thread.

I like these ideas and think they be combined into this: All New Members should have 100 posts before creating a thread, which will then be subsequently need to be approved by a mod before its posted. Any less I would think encourages post whoring, spamming and illrelevent posts.

What about 60? At 60 you become a "Junior Member," so at 60 you earn the right to post threads, but you have to have them approved until 100 posts. That seems simple enough.

HAHAH N00B... sorry I had to...
I think that 50 should be enough because if they have a valid question, they can ask in the GT5 general discussion thread.
This is a perfect example why:

I honestly think that new threads in the GT5 section should only be made by moderators until it actually comes out, this would really put a stop to this issue.

Mods AND premium members Justin, you can't leave the premo's out of it. ;)

I do agree with the pop-up window ! 100 is a little bit too much...

What about each time a new member wants to post a new thread, a warning pop-up window tells him he will be automatically redirected to the Advanced Search Forum features page first before he actually can post his thread. Next question : what does define a new member ???

Here is the answer : when the new member is officially a junior member, he can open a thread without being redirected first.

I agree with that too : each new member's thread should be approved by a modo before it officially appears in the forum...

What do you think about this ?

EDIT : And what about the 3 first threads by any member have to be approved before by a modo ???

EDIT 2 : We can even combine 60 messages + 3 approved threads before being free to post.

100 posts might be a lot, will turn away a lot of new members. Altho I think for 50 first posts, all new member created threads should be check and confirmed with mods.

We also need strict monitoring for these n00bs. Just look at what Iluvgt4 has done to the "You know you've been too much GT4.." thread. He's got SIX POSTS IN A ROW and none of them are any good.. just boring comments...

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I couldn't just let it end on this note. It isn't the number of posts that should be counted but the quality of the posts. No one would have any problem with Iluvgt4's posting if they were well thought out, pertinent posts. If you aren't careful all you will do is promote post whoring. Ilovegt4 and others are no longer noobs, they are junior and senior members now.

This reminds me of the military, if one person messes up, punish everyone!!

I admit I may not have the answer, but painting all new members with a broad brush is not the way to do it. Everyone knows who the offending parties are, aim at them not all the noobs.
