Wow, I haven't used the caps lock key in awhile, I just hold the Shift key, it's like first nature now. :D

Dvorak FTW man.

People who keep hitting the caps lock and windows buttons have sausage fingers, that's all.

Look at it this way:
Have you ever really thought, "Man, that key is really in my way and inconveniencing me at every key stroke, my life would be a lot easier if this key were gone, because I simply cannot ignore this button and leave it for others who actually use it.

No, probably you haven't.
So lets just leave the damn key where it is.

I must know how.
Google is your friend

The caps lock key is an integral part of the keyboard. It needs to stay. There are more uses for computers than what you use them for. I use it constantly at work, as the program we use requires it to be on.

Although, come to think of it, I never type the X key. Lets get rid of it. 💡

EDIT: Well said, 3-Wheel Drive 👍

hahaha, I had to look twice when I saw this thread..... some people have to much time!!!! (says the guy who has just come back from a 2 month holiday...) I think it should be removed... its lives from an era of DOS and geeky programmers..... and the 80's... "shudders".....

Who the hell types in capitals for like a whole sentence, ok maybe one word but you dont need it all the time! The shift should take over the caps lock space above it turning it into one super large SHIFT key!!!

On the subject of removing keys.....get rid of things like pause break! what does it even do!..... get rid of everything in that area above the arrow keys..... mice now have all these functions on them anyway! and the windows key is kind of useless...

 Robin

p.s....... I found it funny after using a keyboard for like 6 years and the keys had worn off to find out which ones I used the most!..... A, S, E, D, L, O, C, R, T,....... oh well everything else is useless ......GET RID OF IT! 💡

Who cares about the CAPS LOCK key? It's the damned INSERT key that needs to be removed. What sadist put that there?

My keyboard also has PAUSE/BREAK, HOME and END keys. I have never used them. And I've got a key to the left of the numbers and above TAB that can produce the following characters: `, ¬ and ¦. What the hell is that for?

 That bloody insert key!!!!! the amount of times it has been accidently activated and deleted entire sentences in word whilst ive been typing! Why oh why would you ever want such a key! it takes longer to activate it and use it than just holding backspace!

Yeah those wierd symbols above tab are useless.....also all the functions keys are useless..... give us more quick shortcut buttons like on the newer keyboards.....

POWER key should NOT be on the keyboard..... although was useful when my room was attacked (at uni) and people tried to mess my computer up (just like a joke)... as I was being pulled away by like 3 people from my desk I made a last ditch attempt to hit the power key and they couldnt stop the shut down MMMUUUHAHAHAHA!!!!

Don't you DARE diss the Pipe sign - On a Linux box, with "grep", it's more useful than Windows' Process Manager and Service Manager put together !...

I thought the pipe symbol was the one down near the left shift key, beside Z?

This symbol - |

As opposed to this one - ¦

I've also never used the NUMLOCK key. Why would I want to convert the number pad into a set of cursor keys, when I've already got a perfectly good set of cursor keys on my keyboard?

I use the page up/down, home, and end keys religiously. It's a lot faster to it the end key to go down to the end of the page, than it is to scroll down. Especially since I view forums at 100 posts per page.

I do think that the insert key should be removed.

"Insert" is good for adding stuff into sentences without overwriting it.

Pause/Break is how you can pause your computers boot-up process to log BIOS info.

The tilde and the ` are very useful making accents in languages other than English.

End is very useful to go to the end of a row when you are typing, and Home to go to the front of a row when typing. Insert is just a pain because it overwrites and it can be tough to tell when it's on.

Can I please have the last five minutes back?

This is such a non-issue, and helps to expose blogs for the hideous waste of time that they are (I'm in the process of decommissioning mine, but I don't really have time). Just because you CAN speak, doesn't mean you HAVE to.

Erm, no...

I don't need to hit the INSERT key so that I can insert things into a document without overwriting it. Why? Because that's the default setting for every single piece of software I ever use. When I accidentally hit the INSERT key, it changes to overwrite mode, which is why it's annoying and stupid.

How often do people use overwrite mode in software than having a special toggle key for it on your keyboard is necessary? Just make a shortcut for it. I mean, I don't have CUT, COPY or PASTE keys, I have to use shortcuts, but like just about all computer users, I use those functions on a regular basis, but never need to switch to and from insert and overwrite mode.

It's absolutely essential that we do something about this!

Caps lock key is pretty useful for flaming people while playing Halo...:D

But seriously though, I have never used Scroll Lock, Pause/Break, End, Home, Pgdown/Pgup key ever in my life. What do those keys do anyway?

I did use Insert once and it screwed up the whole thing I was typing on Word.

That was three years ago though.

Just tried Scroll Lock, and I can still scroll with the wheel.

Now I know what Pageup/Pagedn is as well as Home and End...those are pretty useful.

I find the print screen key useful...... probably because i havent got a clue as to what the shortcut for it is! :sly:

It prints (makes a copy) of what's displayed on your screen. You can then paste this image into Paint or something. This is how people make screen captures.

They need to trash SysRq and just make it the Print Screen button. Nobody even uses SysRq, and even less know what it does. It's useless. I could explain what it does in my words, but I'll let Wikipedia take over:

Wikipedia
A special BIOS routine — software interrupt hexadecimal 15, subfunction hexadecimal 85 — was added to signal the OS when SysReq was pushed or released. Unlike most keys, when it is pressed nothing is stored in the keyboard buffer.

A special key was needed because most software of the day operated at a low-level, often bypassing the OS entirely, and typically made use of many hotkey combinations. The use of TSR programs further complicated matters. To implement a task switching or multitasking environment, it was thought that a special, separate key was needed. This is similar to the way "Ctrl + Alt + Del" is used under Windows NT.

My SysRq and my PrtScn are the same key anyway.

My SysRq, PrtScn and Insert key are all on the same key. Next to it I've got the Pause, Break, and ScrLk key. It's actually makes sense to put so many keys on the one, that way I've only got 2 keys I've never pressed, rather than 6.
