Time to start thinking about a new car, gas is starting to eat me

This might be a bit too cheap of a car, but, how about the K11 Nissan Micra/March?

They're awfully cheap to buy and insure, they're quite reliable (in fact, I think it's quite hard to kill one if it receives a wee bit of mantaince) and get good MPG...

They're just as slow and boring as they are cheap though. But, if cheap and reliable are your maain concerns, it might be suitable.

Yeah... Never made it here

I'm trying to get something faster than my truck too, I need some speed! My year F150 with a 351 did 0-60 in 11.7 seconds, my truck is probably in the 13.5 range. Even just jumping up to something that does it in 9 seconds is going to feel HUGE for me

So long as you get a stick, a ZX2 will break into the 7s all day long. They have basically the same engine as the Focus ZX3, but they don't weigh anything.

What about a mid 90s integra? Good looking cars in my opinion, run forever, and are fairly quick?
Would love one, but they all come with the ricer-honda tax. Much like AE87's and 240s :(

That's a damn rocketship compared to mine, nice!

I like the motorcycle idea, but you already said that it's suicide.

A small, nippy Mazda seems like it would be a fun compliment to a hefty truck. As said before, they've depreciated down to a bargain and are a fun drive.

Kawasaki Ninja 250;

You can pick one of these up for $1500 in good shape. It's easy on gas, reliable, can park anywhere, and so cheap that if you drop it you won't really care. You'll save $$$ on gas and insurance and have a blast doing it.

If you don't have a motorcycle license; your university will have classes on weekends or nights for like $20. You ride their bikes BTW.

Can't believe you missed this opportunity to tell him to start at business with the money he'd otherwise be putting into something that will depreciate. He already has the F-150, which is the root of all millions.

They cost double (at least) what they should because they are MAD JDM TYTE, Yo.

Hmmm not up here. I was going to buy one but then my job at the dealership let me but a much more expensive car in the same budget. For $3000 here you get an 1995 integra with 180k kms (just over 100k miles) . Oh and IF you actually take care of the thing you can easily get them to 400k kms or 240k miles.

Edit: example? http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bnc/ctd/2543237936.html

There is a whole craigslist page just in Vancouver of these things. I don't see how that's double what it should cost?

Probably because finding an unmolested Integra is like finding the needle in the haystack. There is so much junk to sift through. 99% of integras have been abused and revved to hell and back. You'd pay $2500 for that?

That said, they're great cars, and about as awesome handling a fwd car can get. But the question is, will you find one that's been treated right?

If you're saying that the ninja 250s depreciate, you're quite wrong. These things are in such demand that you will likely get back almost 100% of what you put in to it. Just make sure you sell in the spring, when it's a seller's market.

Are those findable for that cheap? I was under the impression focus's were still 4-5 grand... I'll have to look that up

Yeah sorry thought the budget was up to 5K though you still could find one in acceptable conditions for 2.5k. Another car I would recommend then is the 2nd gen subaru legacy. It has more than the horsepower you want, it's not a small sports car so your insurance company will be ok with it, oh and you can find one with all wheel drive. The only problem will be finding one with the manual transmission

That's because you can just import them in Canada, so the JDM TYTE crowd just does that rather than push up the prices of the USDM models.

Holy crap your right. I just checked out listings 2 hours from here in Seattle and there is absolutely none I'd consider buying. Didn't realize, sorry for coming off as a prick there. Everything less than $3000 is either beat to hell or has 200k+ miles, or both actually. Yikes, you guys are getting the short end of the stick there.

I'm sorry but....what?

They cost double (at least) what they should because they are MAD JDM TYTE, Yo.
Yup that's the explanation there. The only ones in my range are ragged to hell and back and all have more problems than my truck, for more money

The root of all millions, but I'm never selling that truck. Aside from the fact it's not worth enough to bother.

I paid $200 for the truck 2 years ago, but damn is it reliable

Subaru... Never even thought of those. That's definately worth a look.

Stick shift is an absolute must. Because I have some time to wait it out, I can wait for the stick to come around. I won't settle for automatic, they bore me and completely reduce a cars value in my eyes. I love driving manual, I'm getting one. Simple

I want one stupid bad. That was my first choice, in that color even. But everyone I talk to says I'll get killed.

I'm just wary about riding a bike around the busiest part of this town. And I don't know if anyone in here has ever been to florida, no one here can drive. The only reason I haven't been hit on multiple occassions is thanks to my horn and the fact no one can miss seeing the truck. If I wasn't going through that crap to get to school I'd be all over the bike

That's where you just tell them that you'll prove them wrong.:)

But seriously though, I have driven in FL. Its only a little worse than Minneapolis. Your bike has the advantage of being the most maneuverable vehicle on the road.

You have to be sharper on the road then you would with a truck but like I said; you take up less space and can definitely react faster to any bozo that pulls out in front of you.

Or get a Saturn SL? It may only be 100hp, but it gets 40mpg hwy.

Hmmm, what's your zipcode mustangGT90210? I have an idea that I need to run through autotrader. :D

Escort ZX2 with a stick, only 85,000 miles on it too which is decently low. It's going for $3,000 but I bet they'd take $2,500.

Another ZX2 with more miles on it

Celica GT

I'm amazed how much more used cars are down in Florida then in Michigan, but then again none of them have ever seen anything close to winter.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of mpg do you get with the truck?

Are your fuel costs so high that it would be cheaper to purchase, fuel, repair and maintain a 20 year old car in addition to fueling, repairing and maintaining a 20 year old truck?

I vote bite the bullet and keep driving the truck.

I'd have that advantage, but it just sketches me at the thought of having no other moto experience then jumping into town.

I get 15-16 combined. It'll be easier to bite the bullet, so to speak, if I get a second job I've applied for. I know the whole "how long will be the tradeoff in the long run" thing, but I see why people go through it now. I'm now at $50 gone in 3 days of driving. I don't make the money right now to work with that.

I'd be completely paycheck to paycheck, and unable to save for anything like next semesters tuition and books. Of course all this goes out the window if I get one of the jobs I've applied for, and then I can re-evaluate (hopefully soon) my financial position. As it sits right now with my current job and hours I will not be able to pull my fair share with everything.

Another idea, Miata. I wanted one before I got the truck, and they still get great mileage. And fun as all hell!

Escort ZX2.

You could probably swing a Contour for that much money, too.

No. In fact, stay away from both of these 2 unless you're looking to spend 10x the amount in repairs a month.

It's not a 4cyl...

It's not that good on mileage--but better than your truck...

It's the awesome classic you've always wanted...

And it has porno red interior!

CLICK

It will be cheap to buy, run and maintain. And it registers as an antique which might be cheaper insurance versus a modern coupe.

You had me until I saw 1981... I'm trying to keep it newer for ease of parts, and what not. I don't want a really old car to be my DD.

Now if you can find a '96 300ZX, I'm interested haha

Thanks, I knew it looked wrong
