Timing belt question

I finally found a car (a 95 Prelude Si :sly: ) but the timing belt it broke on it. the guy who had it before me said he was only going about 45mph when it broke. I was just wondering what the chances are of a valve being bent or a pistion with a hole in it. i have it apart and if its all good it should be running by monday night or tuesday night. But i just wanted some opinions, i'm getting kinda anxious
 
Currently I am having a problem with my dad's Infiniti I30T as well. It seems like there is some "belt" loose, and it's not the timing belt. Our I30T don't have A/C anymore, and if I am correct it has something to do with the drive belt? Too complicated for me. I will just take it to a shop later.
 
It could be nothing... or it could be junk. It depends on the car and I don't know Hondas well enough yet.

If the engine is a non-interference or 'freewheeling' design, then it's a couple hundred bucks to get a new timing belt installed (and a new water pump while you're at it). There won't be amy internal damage because 'non-interference' means that the pistons and valves never conflict.

If it is and interference design, walk away from it. 45 mph is plenty fast enough to bend valves and damage pistons.

So, find a good Honda board and ask about the engine design. Good luck!
 
it depends on if the moter is a "interference" motor, or sometimes called a "valve crusher"

when the timing belt/chain break on these motors the valves get bent, and sometimes cause extensive damage to the motor.

its recomended that the timing belt/chain be replaced every 60,ooo miles, how many miles are on the car/engine ???

Personally I wouldnt touch it, theres a high probability that it is a interference engine and if it is your up for some $$$$.

I know the Accord motors are, and the Prelude engine is fairly close to an Accord motor.
 
Belt on my Seat Ibiza could really do with getting replaced, when it was last checked (about 4 months ago) it looked ok but its supposed to be changed every 70,000 miles/10 years & the car is around 11 years old ('93) & has done just over 64,000 miles.

I've already got a replacement belt but I haven't got around to fitting it as I'd really need my brothers help since I have little experience with car mechanics (well other then helping my brother & this is his time for repayment! & of course I don't want to wreck the engine myself!). But been busy, could have fitted it over xmas but my brother get a bad cold typical eh?

My bros friend had a Citroen AX which is a similar age & its timing belt snapped at 90,000 miles, but still worried about mine as it damaged his engine (repairable but expensive, more than car was worth).

In the Haynes manual it states that once the new belt is fitted it should be double checked by a Seat dealer but as its an older Seat it would probably be a wasted trip & they'd probably say it was ok regardless. But if it was fitted a little tighter than the previous belt (to allow for some slackening when belt was 'run in') would this be ok?

It is an interference engine. Chances are good that the valvetrain is toast.

Thats ok I already bought the car, before I bought it I turned the key and the engine did turn over. When I got home with it I removed the valve cover and everything looks alright. I'm gonna put on the new belts and water pump and hope for the best and if not I have a guy who will re-machine the head for $300. Theres 100k miles on the car and its in realy good condition body wise. Im doing all of the work myself. The dealer estamite was either $50 for the belt or $2000 if the engine was junk. Im gonna hope for the best any more opinions? and does anybody know any good honda boards where I can talk to someone about it?

EDIT: I just remembered if it matters, my dad has an "89 crx and the timing belt broke on that while he was going about 80mph when he got it home he put a new belt in it and its been running ever since getting 40mpg with 260k miles
 
Well where are you located in the world? If you're in the states find a JDM importer and buy a H22 Engine, or look on Ebay

Update: Took the head off tonight and all 4 valves in the #3 cylinder are bent, I'm gonna take it to get fixed tommorow.
