Tips for a newbie?

I've been playing Gran Turismo 5 since the release date, and now i have decided that i want to start driving with manual transmission. I have just started and i need some tips on how i can drive faster. I am using R1 for uppshift and triangle for downshift, since this is the layout i found easiest to use. Please help.

If there are similar treads, please post the link. And if it doesn't belong in this subforum please tell me.
 
Well I feel more comfortable with R2 for upshift and L2 for downshift on my DS3. Gives me normal access to all the buttons I need like right stick for accelerating and braking (which allows for the best accelerator and brake control through turns which is essential for ABS 0 driving) and reverse on triangle as well as the horn, rear view and headlights. A great way I learned to use MT in GT5 (I actually learned on GTPSP) was through drifting.

The good thing about MT is that it allows greater control over your gear selection, which is essential when driving fast and keeping the car under control.

Try to take into account the gear indicator on the HUD and enter corners 1 gear higher than the game tells you (doesn't always apply). It allows greater control in no-assist driving and doesn't have you shifting mid corner always.

The reason i feel more comfortabel with R1-upshifting and Triangle-downshifting, is because i accelerate with R2 and brake with L2. I tried matching my automatic time at the Top Gear Test Track with a Lexus ISF, and i beated it with around 0.2 seconds. So i made a little advancement.

Ok. Good to know you made an advancement (ISF's 1st gear is useless).
 
I use the following, hope it helps:
Accelerate: Right stick (Foward)
Brake: Right stick (Backwards)
Turn left: Left stick (Left)
Turn right: Left stick (Right)
The above will help you to dose your steering, acceleration and braking very effectively
Reverse: Tirangle
E-Brake: Circle
Look back: L1
Headlights: R1
Upshift: R2
Downshift: L2
Horn: R3 (Press your stick, you will hear a click sound, but this is not so relevant)
RA Menu: L3 (Same as above, you might want to check a tutorial for this because it's not easy to do it while racing)

Just practice, DON'T expect instant results , and I want to tell you that I used to play with the R2/L2 buttons to accel and brake, and I was bad, very bad actually, then I changed it to the sticks and I've been improving since then (10 or so months), and I even got a pretty good TT result (check my sig)

I use the same controls except I switched the lights and E brake around, I think using the analog stick for gas and brake gives you a lot more control than R2 L2.
 
I prefer using Left stick for steering, L2 for brakes, R2 for gas, L1 for reverse, Right stick Up for shifting up, Right stick down for down shifting, and O for handbrake. Makes it easy to use for everything: regular racing, drifting, and cruising.
 
I personally use circle for upshifts and square for downshifts, R2 for acceleration and L2 for brake. Seems to make it far easier than any combination.

Since you also use R2 and L2, I'd suggest giving the circle and square button setup a try.

I use this the same setup, with X as hand-brake and triangle as reverse. L1 for rear view, and R1 for either highbeams or horn, whichever I fancy at the time.

This is the only setup I have found that allows me to foot-brake, hand-brake, gas, and downshift (and/or upshift) all at the same time....which may sound a little silly, but for my style of drifting (which involves complete and utter abuse of the transmission :lol:), I find it essential.
 
The flaw with using the right analogue stick to accelerate and brake is that you cannot do both at the same time. Having the ability to simultaneously brake and gently apply the accelerator is both faster and better for stability, I suggest practicing with this for those that can't with their current controller setup.

My personal set up is, as it is for all driving games:

R2 + L2 - Accel and brake
R1 + L1 - Gear up and down
(This allows you to do all of them at the same time).

L3 - Realtime menu (Easy to access even during cornering to check setup, never need to move your thumb)
R3 - Horn
X - Rear view
O - Hand/E-brake
Square - Lights
Triangle - Reverse
D-pad - Navigate and change the RA menu.
Select - Change view
Left stick to steer, Right stick for side views (and I think ghosts on/off).

I used to use circle for E-brake x for down shift and square for up shift

That's pretty slick. If for whatever reason I had to go back to a controller, I would give this a try (I might try it anyways for kicks). 👍
