Tire Options

In Gt4 we all had the chance to up grade our tires to slickes but now in Gt5p we only have the chance to go up to R3 which is the highest we can possibly go. Do u think that GT5 will have Super Soft tires (Slickes) because i know that all the tuning cars use Super Soft tires and i want to know if we will have that opportunity ???

For the life of me I don't know why GT doesn't include brand names for it's tyres. Seems like a perfect opportunity for advertising to me, I'm not quite sure why tyre companies would pass that up. It'd be so much more interesting to have Michelin (insert slick product code here) instead of R3s.

The thing is though, Racing tyres on GT games have far more grip than racing tyres in real life do. Just think about some of the laptimes you can achieve with gran turismo's softest tyres. If you want more realistic tyre wear, use normal or sport ones.

Didn't the TVR in that one video have Goodyear tires on. Don't remember and to lazy to look it up.

Plus when playing you are usually pushing the car to the very limits of grip with the tires screeching on every corner. That is obviously wearing the tires .

Sometimes, F1 drivers do over 30 laps very easly. if there was't a tyre rule. they can do a full race whit the same tyres.

I personally want to see an option to make Normal (road) tires as standard instead of Sport tires (they seem like semi-slick tires to me), and force this to opponent cars too.

Economic cars would come with N1 tyres (eco tires), most other ones with N2 tires (comfort tires), sport cars with N3 tires (sport tires) or, with a few exceptions (as it happens for the same models in real life), S1 tires (for example M3 CSL, certain Ferrari models, etc). This is of course regarding road legal cars. Race cars would have semi-slicks or slicks instead, depending on the model (I'd expect for example a drag car, if they'll include one, to have the softest available slick tiyres)

Right now (at least as of GT4. I haven't tried GT5Prologue. Somebody please confirm) all road cars come with S tires which offer excessive grip compared to more realistic road tires.

You probably don't drive hard enough, even my Subarau Impreza, 4WD and all will screech the tyres going around your typical street corner at 50-60kph, and I'm not talking about 90 degree corners either

Me abusing the 370z in the GT5 Time Trail - R1 tyres, 380ps rear wheel drive car, tyres aren't that grippy anymore with Pro physics

Hah! That's not the tyres mate, that's the fact that an econobox hasn't got enough oomph (or stability) to make the tyres screech.

Mind that I don't have GT5, but I played GT5TT when it was available.
I don't remember if in the Time Trial tires for the normal 370Z were N-type or S-type.
Anyway, my point was that, even if in GT5P physics are more realistic, road cars should have road (normal) tires as default, and as far as I know the various N tires are supposed to reflect the characteristics of the average road tires in those classes (eco/confort/sport).

Your Impreza probably has sportier, specialized (but still road-type) tires that sacrifice comfort (noise) for grip and rigidity. "Ecotires" tend to have a lower rolling resistance, and are designed to make little noise (instead of screeching they make a more modest, sliding noise. I cannot explain correctly). Cheap tires that make much noise without being sporty at all do exist though.

It could be also that, yes (my current car is a Suzuki Wagon R. It might not have enough oomph, but under heavy cornering you can clearly hear tires sliding. They don't squeal though). However there do are differences in produced road noise between various tire models. Some are very noisy and most of the time, from my experience, they are either the cheap ones or the sporty ones.

Might be due the poor suspension on those tyres of cars. Instead of griping the road and sliding, thus causing screech, they tend to do little hops across the surface.

That's the first thing I noticed when I upgraded the springs and dampers on my last car. Instead of chirps, with the stock suspension, I got long screeches
It means the tyres were following and hugging the road better

You're right of course, and certainly there will be some tires that just don't screech as much. There's almost certainly some compounds out there that just won't produce the same amounts of noise on destruction, particularly minor destruction (I'm thinking a little sideways slipping in the corner as opposed to burnouts).

I do agree with your earlier point that it would be nice to see cars coming with realistic-ish tyres as standard, particularly now that they've made N-type tyres a lot more drivable. Anything below a supercar should probably be on some form of N rubber.

It would certainly be nice not to pit 80 times in the lemans 24h this time round or have tyres that have enough life in them to complete at least a couple of fast laps at the nurburgring.

Its my main complaint of past gt's.

changing tyres in GT5 wasn't anywhere near the chore it was in GT4
It doesn't matter what the tyres it comes with, you can easily select what you want from the menu, as seen in the various GT5 demos

Most games have accelerated tyre wear, to enhance the level of interaction, otherwise you can go for a whole race and not have much wear since most tyres will last around an hour in real life races

Let me see - LFS has it, as does all the Simbin GTR games, so does iRacing etc etc

Not many people will actually sit down and race a single race for an hour+ non-stop

It's still a game. If you wanted to take it to it's logically conclusion, you would have to remove all the other gamey features to make it a full simulation - one crash and your out, then pay to repair your car and wait several days before you can drive etc

I will race that long no problem. Yes and one crash should end your race otherwise damage becomes irrelevant. Let those that don't have to time or inclination use beginner mode and those that do can use professional mode. Problem solved.

Im someone who will do full races on f1 CE non stop.
i dont like accelerated tyre wear or fuel use but i love having to think out a pit strategy.

I'd love brand names for tires personally. Especially the different types, i.e.: Buy a crappy Holden Commodore and you get Bridgestone Turanzas. Get a 350Z and stick some Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s on it.

Yeaah but with tires comes suspension, which if is set right, it can reduce the amount of oversteer and/or understeer.

I like to see brand tires also, only if they can make them like they perform in real life. One question is that if [insert brand name] tires are bad in game, will it affect their reputation in real life? (if they have simulated it perfectly)

I think PD just bump up the life expectancy of the tires if they don't do the brand-name thing like Forza did.

If PD can bump up R1s to 30 laps, and R3s to 20 laps, then changing tires in the pits will become more of a 'do you want to' rather than 'necessity' most of the time.

There is a video of a modded TVR running GOODYEAR racing tires, with the big GOODYEAR on the sidewall.

Indeed, and hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

I've learnt to expect very little from PD though. The final result will be good, but getting hopes up about specifics is a recipe for disaster.
