Hello,

- In GT5, is there any way you can completely turn off tire wear - in all offline races and comptetitions [possibly even resorting to using a cheat]?

- When playing online, is tire wear usually turned on in online races and competitions?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Tire wear is active offline or online, and you can't turn it off. Why would you like to turn it off, just wondering.

It is on but only effects endurance races, if you're tyres are red they're not dead they're just overheating, I had this with my Audi R8 5.2, front tyres where constantly red so I had to increase my braking zones at the end of long straights and leave the throttle a bit later and the tyres dropped back to cold again (I assume that is why you're asking the question as your tyres are red?)

When you say they are on, do you mean on online play?

I'm asking these questions, as they will decide whether I buy a PS3 (and GT5) or not.

I loved the GT series on the PSX. But ever since the devs decided to implement tire wear, GT has been ruined for me. Up until GT3, I could use a cheat.
But in GT4 that wasn't possible anymore.

If online games in GT5 are generally played with tire wear turned ON - and there is no cheat/hack that will allow me to turn tire wear OFF in offline/career mode, I won't be getting a PS3. :(

Yes, I know tire wear adds to realism, sure.
But how realistic is it that a 12 year old kid would be driving a $10 million super car @ 400km/h? :)
Not to mention crashing into a wall at that same speed, and be perfectly fine.

Realism is in the eye of the beholder.

I, personally, just hate it when my handling experince changes during a race. I want the same handling at lap 4 as I had at lap 1.
Not having that drives me crazy.
That's just the way I am.

There's nothing wrong with wanting it that way but Gran Turismo just isn't for you in that case. I don't think you should get a PS3/GT5.

I think I'm correct in saying that you can make online lobbies without tyre wear.
And when racing offline, you don't get tyre wear in any races except endurance races. And to be honest I like it in those races, it's kinda cool to actually have to pit in long races.
But even in 20 lap F1 races you don't have tyre wear at all. The only damage is visual.

There is no tire wear (and fuel usage) in any A-spec or B-spec race in the offline mode up to endurance races that start at level 25.

Given that you are a casual gamer, I don't think you will ever try the endurance races (the shortest one is about 2.5 hours, saving not possible in race) even if you get to level 25, so this will not be an issue for you.

Frankly, even if there was tire wear, I can hardly see this ever being a problem, except probably for the 10-20 lap Formula GT races. In online races with tire wear enabled, even when on soft tires with a 700 hp machine, the tires last about 15-20 minutes.

Tire wear is such a small factor that I don't think it is even worth considering if you want to buy GT5 (and PS3) or not. The fact that the game significantly harder with a gamepad (almost impossible to get golds on some licences and special races, or compete online competitively), and that it is a truer simulation than other games (hence a lot harder) should be a more important factor.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but this tire wear thing has been bugging me.

I've doing some testing on possible cars to use for the Le mans 24 hrs enduro, and I've noticed that in the three cars I tested over a period of 12 laps, the Audi R8 Oreca, Pescarolo C60 Hybrid, and the Sauber C9 all had the same rate of tire wear, regardless if it was hard, medium, or soft compounds. And the tire wear all wore down at the same rate although a bit negligible regardless of power level.

Does tire wear really differentiate when you are actually doing an endurance race?

what's an acceptable number of laps for racing hard tires to last? I was getting about 10-12 laps in until they wore down to about half. At this point they were sliding too much. This was in a mazda furai on the first 60 lap endurance race @ grand valley

I have no idea. The tires in the tests all wore down to half on lap 6 on La Sarthe. And if I can remember correctly, I was able to squeeze in 13 laps on racing softs in the Grand Valley enduro in a fully tuned R34 Vspec II. And the Skyline carrying more weight and more torque to the wheels, I suspected the soft tires to last around 8 laps at most.

I also find that the TCS doesn't really do much in helping tire wear also.

Try race NASCAR around the ring with RH, the 1/2 life of the tire is about 2 laps......

So I guess PD did a bamboozle on us with the tires.

As the way things are, I'll might as well just use the racing softs at the Le mans 24 hours as my fuel is always depleted before the tires need changing.

Yeah, there's been a few threads already on this subject, for some reason, there is not a huge difference in durability between the different compound of racing tyres, that there were on previous GT's.

Many people are finding that using soft tyres is the better option as the time you gain per lap is enough to compensate, or indeed gain, over the time it'll take for the extra pit stop this will cost you, especially in endurance races.

There is definitely not as much difference between the compounds in gt5 as previous games in the series, so I stick to racing softs, if you don't lock the brakes or spin the wheels they will last as long as the hard tyres

Sometimes people want to drift a little for fun and they'll find themselves returning to the pit after each lap because they are unable to keep control with busted rear tires. That's why I'd like to see an option to turn off the tire wear.

I had the misfortune of finding about the tyre wear problem with this game today in the Indy 500. I'd been using racing mediums all race and they lasted about 25 laps, pitted with 40 laps to go, full fuel and put hard tyres on to finish the race...HAH....PDs alternative reality bites me on the butt again. Tyres wore out the same as mediums about 25 laps.

This is utterly pathetic for a game calling itself a "simulation". On top of the issue with Soft racing slicks performing better than wet tyre in the rain in Aspec. It really takes the biscuit.

For racing online, the host have the option to switch off tires wear. Over heating will still exist though.
