Tires - which is hardest and softest?

Each tires, except for ones for snow and dirt, are numbered like this: N1, N2, N3, then S1, S2, S3, and R1, R2, R3. Which tires are the hardest, and which one is softest, by the number? Tire number 2 is medium, I assume.

3 is the softest (most grip), 1 is the hardest (least grip).

N - Normal/Economy. Low life.
S - Sports. Medium life.
R - Racing. High life.
