We have limitations(atleast I think we do ;) ), and there's never been a time where we ever lost control of the car at high speeds(there's been several times of going over an icy bridge when there's snow on the road going like 45 and we started to slide around(Probe GTs have wide tires which suck on snow and ice), but to my knowlage there's never been a full spin out wreck or anything...well my mom use to have a old Capri, and the back end was light as hell, and on her way to work one day(this was all before my time BTW), she hit a patch of ice, slid off into the grassy median but then regained control and made it back on the highway, no damage done(except a huge scare)). Also, since my dad is a Mazda Tech, all of our cars are kept in mint driving condition(a few have rust spots, those are 14 yr old+, and they've gone though STL winters), so we've never had a highspeed mechanical failure(I take that back...well sorta...my mom had a Firebird back in the '70s, and going down the highway it caught fire. She didn't wreck though, just pulled onto the shoulder and jumped out).

Speed only kills if you crash. We don't crash. Even if we did, we wouldn't kill anyone. And it's not like every time we drive we do 120+ down the highway, we normally drive like 10-15 over the limit on the highway, no problems, and we get to our destination faster. We have never been pulled over for highway speeding either(short story: Subaru has training schools in Naperville Ill, right outside of Chicago. Last year my dad(he's a Mazda and Subaru Tech) went to one such thing(they have them so often, it's wierd) with another mech from the dealership in my dad's RX-7. On the way up, my dad decided to get some sleep and let the other guy drive. Well, my dad woke up to the other guy getting a ticket in my dad's RX. :) ).

So while you are conservative and looking out for my safety and other's safety, did you ever stop to think that car makers make cars that can do excessive speeds, and some people want to safely test their cars?

Ohh, and a side note. Mazda's cruise control(atleast on the late 80's/early 90s cars) only lets you accellerate up to 90mph with the cruise, yet you can just floor it, go past that, and set the cruise. We have done 95-100mph cruises before. It's great. :D
I have said all i am going too about this matter, hope for your sake you wise up before its too late.

well, my personnal fastest speeds, hmm
well,
#1 Ferrari 575m - 186 mph clocked speed on a track - what a beautiful day it was :)
#2 The Miata - fastest I got that thing was up to 169 mph, unofficial though, no speed trap to track it.
#3 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo - 159mph trackside tracked by radar.
#4 Honda Civic - buried the speed gauge on a huge downhill. With only 97hpo though I believe I was only doing 90mph but then again the speedommeter goes up to 120mph - unofficial.

Have not quite gotten the Iroc up to top speed yet, but can't wait :)

You sound like my friend Rodney, and his family. "Oh, we're <insert their last name here>'s...we won't crash. We know how to drive better than most people." About a month after I heard that crap from them his mom flipped her Taurus chasing after Rodney through their neighborhood, and he totaled his truck, and a new Expidition, a few months after that, and seriously injured 5 people not including himself.

Those people don't go 120+ on any public roads. There is no such thing as speeding "safely" on a public road.

it all depends on the car you are driving. i've done 134mph (214km/h) in a vauxhall (opel) omega on a german autobahn, it could have done more but traffic was starting to get heavy. and on a two laned road when traffic gets heavy you dont want to be travelling at twice the speed everyone else is! :D heh.

but the car felt super steady. i normally drive a 14 year old vauxhall astra and you need REAL balls to drive that at over 70mph let me tell you. heh. it doesnt have power steering but at that speed everything starts shaking and the steering feels so loose its non-existent.

but in response to MazKid, speed limits are there for a reason. travelling at the limit in the city has saved me from running people over many times. on motorways speed limits are stupid but thats a different matter. though i never speed in the city, its just not worth it.

There was a boot leg copy of a kid doin 360 on the autobahn, til the police saw it an arrested him for speeding, duh ?

I wouldnt count on that. What if your tyre blows at 120mph?
If a car pulls into your lane at the speed limit thinking your doing the same speed when in fact, you are going twice the speed. What will happen then?
The list goes on...

gonna be splattered on the windscreen and or pavement

Oh so now everyone's beating me down cause of thier experiences?

Say what you will, we will continue to drive like we always do. I'll let you know when we crash.

Just because you say you're good drivers, doesn't mean you are. You might not make a mistake, but someone might do something innocent while you come screaming along and whollop them.

Will send flowers, plz forward the addy of next of kin...

I find it strange in that in these forums so many are against driving fast, after all isnt this for lovers of cars mostly fast ones? OK you must be sensible but putting your foot down on a dead straight wide motorway,freeway,autostrada,etc.. on those rare occasions when there is hardly another car around and good visibility and weather is NOT dangerous. Bad driving kills not speed.
Oh Mazkid my MX-5 was a stock 1.8iS I managed to get the speed once or twice on the flat not down a hill  the car was unmoded apart from a KnN filter she has gone to another lucky owner now:(

Your dad maybe the best driver around, but when there is a crash, the chances are that he will not cause it (he would actually because hes speeding, but do you know what I am meaning?), but it doesnt matter,no one will die, even if you rear end them going twice their speed.

Are you sure it wasnt 360KM/H? If its MPH its probably not true. He also might have been speeding because he was in the wrong lane (there are parts of the autobahn (sp) that have lanes where there are speed limits. Like the right lane is for 60KM/H, then the one next to it is for 60-120KM/H +)...

Just because you are an awesome driver, doesnt mean that everyone else is. Even if its the other persons fault, those speeds = death. I believe you when you say your family is full of really good drivers, but that doesnt change everyone else around you.

I think he only speeds when there is nobody else around like my dad does. When the road is empty he speeds a little (about 10-20MPH over the limit). Its OK to speed about 5 or so MPH over the limit as long as you let other people know what your doing by signalling properly and watching what you and others are doing. Doesnt mean you should do it though...

Alright alright. I give up.

I just want you all to know that it's not going to happen. I can't(and won't) stop my parents from speeding cause I like going really fast. "Zoom Zoom" if you will.

Atleast we aren't like those idiotic highschool kids who hill jump a Viper down the road both of my grandparents live off of that has a speed limit of 35mph(well, they live off of connecting roads) at over 120 and forgot that the hill is followed by a slight turn, and they wrapped around a telephone post and, well, died.

And who said they were for you? The people you killed might have been Christian.

;).

no offense to butt in here, but speed should be designated for TRACK only! Now I have done some stupid things in my earlier childhood, speeding definately was one of them. On top of that, in cars that were not really meant to go that fast either.

There was this lady here in Orlando about a year or two ago. She was going down the road that I take to work. She had her kid and a friend of her kid in the back of her BMW 850(I think, one of those high power four-door sedans). She made a left hand turn and in a matter of seconds was going 80mph in a 40mph zone. . . She lost control of the car and slammed straight into a tree. I had to pass by this on my way home. Let me tell you something. . . Seeing a mangled body is one thing, but two kids, that is more then a life moving experience. You ever feel more then one emotion at one time. . . How about 20 different ones. My life changed that day and never will be the same. I am sure some of the people on this forum in Orlando might lknow about this accident, it happened right off lake mary drive on the road that eventually leads to Wymore road if that helps. I forgot the name of the road, but I'll find out tomorrow. BTW the two kids in the back died.

the key word here, is THINKS is an good driver

firstly, this is a thread about top speed in a car, the debate about whether racing/driving fast on streets is good/bad has already taken place in this thread: here mazkid i suggest u go there. its long but well worth a read, might help change ur attitude.

though i also agree with liquid yellow,

there are large areas on the autobahn where the speed limit is taken down to 120kph etc, its not all unlimited. and they are very strict about keeping the speeds low in those sections.

with good reason, the human body can not react fast nuff at 390 anything

i just worked out that at 390kph the 'thinking distance' is 73 metres, thats quite a long way, heh between you seeing someone's brake light, and actually hitting the brake pedal. however thats even more reason for fitting better brakes, so that once you activate the brakes you wont take any more time than necessary to reduce your speed heh
