Should Top Gear be produced in North America?

The issue I have is that NBC is slipping, real bad, in the quality. I could perhaps see PBS pulling it off, perhaps, even, by exchanging it for Motorweek, which is rather dry and boring. In fact, the local PBS station runs British comedies, and they're the ones who introduced the U.S. to Monty Python (talk about your crude British humor)...I don't see why they couldn't handle even importing BBC's version of Top Gear and letting us who don't have cable watch.

By the way, is this gonna be on NBC proper, or on one of their cable networks?

Oh, one more thing: they can't do caravan jokes...because caravans don't hold anyone up in this country.

Considering the amount of eco-idiots there are in the United States, a North American Top gear would be a complete flop. As it is any semi-informal type show on the Speed channel is aimed towards the general public, meaning it's mostly "ooh look it's a Ferrari, it's red, it's fast, look at the shiny wheels :dunce:, but over here is a prius, it saves all the polar bears and gets 5 bagillion miles to the gallon 👍"

They should just play more top gear on BBC and get rid of the news portion, our news is worse enough.

Looks like NBC is allowing them to do whatever they want, but I will believe it when I see it. If they can't get ad dollars from car companies what sort of market are they going to try to go after to show commercials?

Top Gear USA free to criticize cars at will
When I was a kid there was this terrible car show on television that was sponsored by a certain automaker that shall remain nameless. Every week – that is, every week I could bear to watch it, at least – the hosts would review a car from that company, and guess what? They always liked it! And that's what makes Top Gear such a hit. Because the BBC is publicly-funded, they don't have advertisements. (Notice that downloaded episodes of Top Gear run an actual full hour, instead of the usual "hour-long" shows that run 45 minutes.) Without advertisers, Clarkson and company are free to say what they want about whatever car they're reviewing, and so journalistic integrity remains intact, even as they catapult caravans and play soccer (sorry, "football") with hatchbacks.

With NBC "gearing" up for its own version of the hit car show, reportedly to be called simply "Gear", the fear was that, as the show would be dependent on commercial advertisements, the recently-announced team of co-hosts would be reigned in by the bean-counters regarding what they could and could not say about the cars they'd be reviewing. Thankfully, on a recent episode of his radio talk-show, Adam Carolla revealed that no such limitations would be imposed by NBC on the show's editorial autonomy.

I still think the show is going to be a failure, especially with the cast they have lined up. I just can't get excited about Adam Corolla doing anything.

I still don't trust NBC with it, but, who knows. I'm secretly hoping I'm wrong...and I'd hate for this to be great, and there not be enough car enthusiasts in this country to keep it afloat in the ratings.

EDIT: There are two things that would make me feel much better about this show...

1. (more likely, but snowball's chance in Hell) Britain becomes SO left-wing that they force Clarkson to leave.
2. (less likely than a snowball's chance in Hell) Brad, Joey and I get calls from NBC.

WOW I thought this thread was dead a long time ago.. haha well take a look at speedtv always a new show ever year.... the only thing they got going for them is Test Drive...
