Here's the problem:

PS2 has optical Toslink output, required for 5.1 as I understand.

Cheap DD5.1/Pro-Logic receiver only has digital coaxial input (the orange RCA plug).

If I get a Toslink digital to Coaxial Digital convertor box (Example), will everything convert ok for the 5.1 to work? Will there be any sound degradation? Will the signal still be a pure digital signal?

And does GT4 support true surround sound using this method?

I saw that converter aswell. when u look it up in shops arround in NL you can find it starting €20.- till arround €30,-
I thought off buying it but i don't got a coaxial input on my soundcard (Sound Blaster audigy2)

So i'll have find another solution to get surround environments in my gameroom.....

And does GT4 support true surround sound using this method?

GT4 supports Dolby Pro Logic II, a matrix surround format that extracts five channels of audio from two channels of input. These two channels can be passed through the red/white RCA cables that come with the PS2. Using the optical output on your PS2 will give you clear sound and a great S/N ratio, but in GT4 it makes no difference to the surround format you can use.

So straighten me out here, is this correct:

DOLBY PRO LOGIC II - Extracts five channels of audio from two channels, can be output through either RCA or optical jack on PS2, supported by GT4

DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 - Consists of 5 TRUE channels of audio, can only be output through optical jack, not supported by GT4

And the other question... you say that PLII "extracts" five channels from a two channel input, does this mean that it "makes up" the other channels (so rear speakers would just be a mirror image of front speakers regardless of the source of the sound in-game), or is the rear channel data (and center for that matter) encoded somehow in that two channel input?

Sorry to be so slow to comprehend this, I am a complete noob when it comes to surround sound, never had it before.
