Yes, you do have to hit the crack! I remember i once did this in GT3, and took a real look on the tracks... i got rally far out..

you usually then just get stuck in the wall ending up having to back out

i did this with my escudo in GT3... raced to the end of the world and the game freezed (froze?)...
