It's not just PD. I think you have just gotten lucky until now.Why does PD prevent game save transfers?

It prevents DLC piracy since many games just use unlock codes for data that everyone has on disc or downloads in updates. But why do "they" care if you transfer game saves from one PS3 to another. I'm curious to know the reason it is not allowed.
Erm i'm gpoing to sound like a thicko here
But if you do the Ethernet Cable Backup from one PS3 to the Other do you need two TV's ?
No, you just set one to output HDMI and one to SCART etc and switch between inputs on the TV.
I got a slim PS3 at the weekend and tried the data transfer..... Worked perfectly!!! I found it much more straight forward than doing pretty much anything on a PC so pat on the back SONY. I'm impressed. 👍
1) It all looks correct.I want to get a new slim PS3 before my old 60gb fatty goes YLOD on me. However I'd like to use the 500gb hdd from the 60gb instead of the 120gb that comes with the slim. From reading this thread I now know that I can't just swap the drives. My understanding is I'll have to do a data transfer from my fat to the new slim. Then backup the data to an external device (either FAT32 formatted HDD or large SDHC card) then swap drives and let the new PS3 reformat my 500gb HDD. Finally transfer the data from the backup device onto the just formatted 500gb HDD.
1. Is that all correct?
2. If I have 40gb data on my 500gb drive can I back it up to 2x 32gb or 3x 16gb SDHC cards or do I need to use a 64gb SDHC or a formatted external USB drive. (I have lots of 16gb and 32gb SDHC cards)
3. Is there an easier way to do this that I'm overlooking?
I know on the same system it works. I cannot say with a new system. I would go with Sony's instructions to be safe.I found out elsewhere that I can backup my 500gb them transfer it to my new PS3. Then I should be able to install the 500gb into the new PS3, let it format it, and finally restore the data onto the new PS3 from the backup
Will this work with Locked data like GT5 gamesave?
That is the big question, but I assume not. I do not know for sure though.Yes so we have confirmed the data tranfer utility transfers everything gt5 intact, but how about the backup utility in case your PS3 or hdd dies and then AFTERWARDS you get a new PS.
Can you use the backup utility to restore your stuff on the new PS if the old one is already dead?
This will work, just the same as replacing the HDD just to have a larger capacity. Also, what if only the hdd dies in the current PS3 but the PS3 itslef is fine, if you put in a new hdd, can u use previously backed up data from the backup utility to restore your game?
1) It all looks correct.
2) It needs to be one drive, something larger than 40GB. It does compress some, but I have never checked to see if the percentage is constant. - If you still have the original 60GB I suggest finding a case or connector to hook it up as an external USB drive for this.
You could partition the drive so you only have a 40GB chunk of Fat32.I have a 320gb HDD that I use for my satellite dish. I don't think there are any programs on there that I need to keep. I'll reformat it to Fat32 and use it. I think I'll do data transfer to the new PS3 first then upgrade the HDD. It's more cumbersome, but at least I know it will work.

Also, you can have more than one back up on an extrenal drive, so long as you have the space. So, if you wanted to try one way and it failed you could still do it the other way. It would just be very time consuming.
I'll be buying a new one since mine is currently a repaired YLOD. I may experiment to confirm things one way or another.
