Well Here I go.I got a 96 Mitsubishi Eclipse Rs that i recently hit a gurdrail withand messed up the tranny.I got a used tranny for it at the junkyard that im getting this week . Problem is i never took off a tranny or put one tranny and my folks are only paying for the tranny .So I gotta install it and take it off myself. Does anybody know of a website that explains how u do that that would be great. Btw its stick shift if that helps.

Get the Haynes or Chilton's Manual for your car.
Get a friend that is very mechanically inclined.
Buy 4 Jackstands if you don't already have them and a hydraulic floor jack that rolls easily.
This won't get the job all done, but it'll be a good start.

If you are in high-school, particularly one that offers auto-shop, you might be able to convince them to "help" with (by that, I mean do) the job.

I don't know much about transmissions, thats why I normally take them to a transmission shop. Problem is, they like to screw you over. So doing the work yourself is a good learning experience.

I too recommend the Haynes manual, a lot of free time, and something to punch when you get frustrated (preferably not siblings, your significant other, or small children).

1. Factory manual. Worth it in every way, shape, and form. Dealer item. Don't complain about the price, it's worth it. Really.
2. VFaq. Google it.
3. Any of the many, many DSM dedicated sites out there - DSMTuners, DSMTalk, and VFAQ among them.

If I recall correctly, the RS was FWD (Not the AWD one... Damn Mitsubishi and their non-logical trim designations). This'll probably be a whole weekend job for you, since you don't sound particularly familiar with DSM's. One thing that I will insist upon is that you fill that new/used transmission with good synthetic fluid. It'll make it shift far better than any mod you could do to it, save for a rebuild. I'd recomend BG Synchroshift II. Expensive, but like the manual, worth it. Won't be available at your local auto supply, so you'll have to find somewhere to order it from. I know Mach V Motorsports carries it (www.MachV.com).

If you're going to have the trans out, I'd also think about the condition of the clutch. Is it worth replacing while you've got everything apart? For the few hundred in parts & having the flywheel machined, it might save you another big hassle in the near future.

ugh. I hope you have an Engine hoist. every book I've run into states you have to take the engine and tranny ass'y out of the vehicle entirely, THEN take the tranny off and swap.
at least YOU could do it. I had one peice of electronics go off on my current vehicle, and i think it's gonna be too expensive to change a one cent part :P (it runs my speedo/Odometer(s) )

Ughhh sound like a damn project that I took too big off a bite.I dont think i realize what iv'e gotten myself into on that one !!

So finally today I went to the junkyard and took out the tranny!
And i got me a 97 gs front bumber and the sexy ass headlights with the black in the background that the 97 have .ANd a compression lower arm !
It was a pain in the :censored:to get out the tranny .
