Evening boys. I'll cut straight to the chase.

I have a Toyota Aygo manual. Today out of nowhere the gear shifting up became much more difficult. Now I have to push the stick much more strongly into the gear slot. It feels like a 2 stage process to complete the gear change. Downshifts generally aren't a problem.

Anyone know what this could be and how much it's going to cost me?

And the clutch isn't biting at a different point or sluring between changes?

First thing, check fluid in the master. I'm assuming it's a hydraulic clutch.
Could be the throw out bearing but that usually makes noise when on the way out.

And the clutch isn't biting at a different point or sluring between changes?

It was slightly sluring at some times today but not majorly and not very often. Just happens to be the same day my exhaust breaks which has rather pissed me off.

What do you mean by sluring? Is the clutch pedal doing anything other than what it normally does, like feeling soft or light in particular? Was clutch engagement closer to the floor than usual?

The clutch pedal feel has not changed whatsoever.

You check the clutch fluid reservoir under the hood to make sure that isn't a problem. It doesn't sound like it, but it's good to rule things out anyway.

In the mean time, has your transmission made any abnormal spinning or whining noises while shifting gears? Often you can hear things inside the transmission normally, so when the noises change it's a clue.

No abnormal noises. I might miss a gear now and then but no, nothing noticeably different.

How is the shifter attached to the transmission? Cable or some kind of metal rod? When FWD cars with a metal rod shift linkage get older, if they have rubber bushings from the factory those will tend to weaken, causing mis-shifts and overall making it harder to shift. New polyurethane "shifter bushings" work great for this issue.

As stated above - could be the linkage cables. When you mean shifting up, does that mean upwards motion of the lever or gear ratio? If it's doing it going into the odd numbered gears and not the even, or vice versa, then it most likely is a cable linkage issue. If its doing it on any numbered gear as long as its up shifting then maybe not so much.

I've also heard of the clutch friction disc coming apart and causing a similar problem, though normally you'd think there would be some noises associated with the problem.

To add to what most have mentioned. Get a price quote on the pressure plate & throw-out bearings set. This could also cause rough changes.
For that matter, just get the entire kit, which includes the clutch-plate, pressure-plate, throw-out bearings & alignment tool.

Hope this helps, happy hunting.

Alright so guys basically, whenever I drive the car in first gear up some revs to pull away, I try to pull the stick out of first but I can't until the revs drop quite a way back down. Only then can I put the stick into a higher gear, when the revs have dropped down to almost tickover. It happens with all upshifts and not downshifts at all. The change itself feels like a 2 stage push to get it into the gear and feels much less smooth than before.

What is the problem? I have been driving with it and I can manage but I'd rather fix it.
