Should the transmission whine be left in the game?

  • No, it overruns the engine's music

  • No, but it should not be louder than the engine

Installing a Full Customizable Transmission on any car automatically, and unfortunately, produces a very noticeable and excessive transmission whine in every camera view except third person. Which ruins driving cockpit view in tuned premiums.

Do you ignore it, hate it, or have never noticed it?

It needs to go.

Edit: Poll question is whether or not it should be removed from the game, not left...

It is overdone a little for sure. But after a few minutes i dont notice it.

Its the straight cut gears, listen to the in car view of most touring cars, the gear box is usually louder than the engine, mostly due to the frequency of the gear noise, as well the driver is sitting above the gearbox.

I think it's annoying as hell and even though some race cars have very loud transmission sounds, I don't believe all of them should and especially not the street cars. The transmission sounds in GT5 also don't sound to much like they do in real life IMO.

The old muscle cars with stock trannies won't go above (+_)120 mph. Putting the racing one in is the only way to get it above that (the 5 speed doesn't seem to do much better) with the draw back of that horrible whine. I'm all for cutting back on the sound.

As soon as the whine is taken out there will be a thread complaining that the tranny sounds are not realistic.

If you don't want the whine of straight cut gears, then don't put the fully customizable transmission in street cars.

If we could customize the final drive ratio (which in real life is quite easy on cars with a real diff) we wouldn't need to use the fully customizable transmission as much.

Street cars aside not all race cars with what GT5 calls a "fully customizable transmission" make that whine and even if you insist they do, GT5 doesn't properly recreate that sound.

It is realistic but certainly dominates the in car view and is incredibly annoying thats for sure. If we could just change diff ratios we could get around the problem of having to fit the full tranny. How`s that for a idea for patch 1.11!

If I'm not mistaken I have seen linkages for a H pattern shifter to actuate a sequential box set up in a road car before. Dunno why tho PD couldn't take the effort to just add the sequential shifter where the normal shifter goes in the premiums to add to the realism.

well console games are all about compromises and optimization, they don't have the resource to do everything

Type this into youtube, 'm3 gtr racecar' and then stop moaning..

I am fairly certain I briefly saw a Gillette Vertigo in that video.

Back on topic. I personally don't care for it, preferring the pure exhaust note, but I am all for realism in any game they would like to call a sim, and that is the noise of straight cut gears.

Whining trannys get the 👍 from me.

It needs to go.

No it doesn't.

A tacoma I drove sounded like a blaring loud hybrid whine or a jet engine or something....too loud for sure

The problem is that a fully customizable racing transmission is the only possible way in GT5 to change gear ratios. It should be possible to change the final drive only with no added noise.

Isn't a straight cut gearbox a sequential shifter?

i believe so

Yes, I think so...

Yes a sequential gearbox has straight cut gears.

A sequential gearbox probably does have straight-cut gears - But not all straight-cut boxes are sequential

They are used mainly in racing applications where a smoother shift and reduction in noise isn't needed. Straight-cut gearboxes are stronger and more efficient ie less power is lost.

^This.

Sequential does not mean straight cut gears. Helical cut gears are the gears you find in road cars to reduce noise, straight cut gears are what you find in race cars, the cut angle on the gears has nothing to do with whether gearbox is manual, sequential or automatic. It has everything to do with how load/efficient the gears are though. Sticking a racing gearbox in GT5 is equivalent to swapping out the helical gears for straight cut, (as well as a few other changes) which is why the noise changes.

By putting a racing transmission in a car you have to be prepared for the sound.
It's GT5's problem that there isn't an alternative street transmission, which only has changeable final drive.
GT5 definitely needs a bigger choice of gearboxes.

I don't mind the sound, mostly due to the fact that I don't buy racing transmissions for street cars.
