Boombexus and I have concocted a new race format that we're going to tryout for the week of December 23rd.

In many OLR events that I've run, I've often wondered how many laps others have put in on a particular race. On some races I have a good run, on others I am on the bottom of the pile. This relates to how much time I have available for a race.

It was through an idea of Boombexus and development by him and I that we came up with a new format that we're trying for something a bit different. On a comparable timeline, how well do you run.

On December 23rd, the weekly race will be announced. However, the only information included will be a car and a car set-up. You'll have all week to get familiar with the car and set it up with general settings that you feel comfortable with on any given track. On Friday evening (December 26th) Boombexus will edit the announcement post to include a location of a Chatroom. The following morning (Saturday, Dec. 27th), all participants will log in before 11am Eastern Standard time (AKA New York City). At precisely 11am EST Boombexus will announce a track/race selection. You will then have 1 hour to race to your potential, and PM him your time. You can tweak the car settings as much as you'd like in that time.

The results will be posted shortly thereafter.

So please plan your timeline to allot the correct hour (given your time zone) on that day.

Too late for me. I'll out of town (you know... Christmas). You guys have fun though.

I'm not sure, but I THINK I will be at home at that time on that particular day, so I should be able to do this. Sounds like a fun idea:D

I think I can do this, too. Won't get to do too much practiceing but that Saturday morning ought to be fine.

I will be working all day saturday :( This sounded really cool... Oh well, will be interesting to see results. But I still think the quicker guys out there or maybe even people with more experience playing the game will be up front like usual.

Not sure about time differences and all but it could very well be sunday(my time) by the time this rolls aroundand like T13R I will be working all day, or if Ive figured the time difference wrong I'll be asleep

Wouldve been good to have a skid in this though

Not sure I like this format; even though it's basically what I do anyway (seriously, I spend the first 3 days or so testing the car and tuning it, then getting myself used to the track in that car, and racing it). The format is not a good one, as an hour is hardly enough time to race, and also, I might not be able to get online at 11 when things come down to it (winter percussion practice doesn't interfere yet, but after Christmas I won't be able to race). Also, what kind of chatroom is it going to be? If it's an AIM chat then someone will need to invite me in because I can't search for them (dumb filter blocks it). The idea is good, but the format needs a little tweaking in case things can't quite go according to plan...

We knew there would be a number of issuse related to time. I experimented with different start times, and it always stiffed one particular group. Be it North America, Europe, or down under. The synopsis we came up with, is that we'd try it and catch as many people as we can and run this again, should be get enough participation. IN the second and hopefully third running, we'll alter the start time to accomodate a different zone.

As for Chat room, it'll be very easy to access. Boombexus will provide a clickable link that brings you right to it. No additional software necessary. Thank Jordan, he provided the chatroom.

I have assumed that the fast guys are fast no matter what. The slow guys are gaining every step. This format very quick and easy. With it also being christmas, we went for a simple and easy one that wouldn't necessitate loads of time to run.

that's cool. The time will be an issue for me almost definitely, so my entries will almost indefinitely be late or early (preferable the latter). Good news is that I should know ahead of time when I'm not going to be on time, and so can ask Boom ahead of time for the info and get a time in early.

Not to sound like a jerk, but 11:00 AM Saturday morning, is not a time I can just set aside for playing GT3. This new format seems like it will be overly complex and I can not schedule my time around playing GT3. I've enjoyed taking part in the races so far, as the format is very relaxed and the event ideas are good. This is just my take on it, not to be downing you guys for trying new ideas, but I can't see how this will make the series more accessiable to players.

dude, 11 A.M. is in the morning, not the night. We're talking Saturday Morning here...

It's a great idea to spice things up. There will still be the traditional series but every once in a while the format will be like this, is what I gather.
8am my time then...I think I'm on.

By the way redlinefox, 11am at night?

umm, how many times do I have to say this;
11 A.M. IS THE NEXT MORNING!!! We'd get all our information Friday evening, and then saturday at 11 A.M. we will race. Honestly! think about it for a minute, people!

Hmm, yes I read that wrong my bad Sough. Anyway, my previous statements still stand, though corrected about the time.

This is only a trial run. I may or may not appear again in the weekly format. Boom has been running this seris for almost a year now and is always looking for new ideas. We're not looking to improve the accesibility, but rather try out a new idea.

As for overly complex, it's not much different than the usual races. Boom'll announce a car on Tuesday morning. You'll have all week to test it and adjust it to your liking. On Saturday morning (or Sunday in the wee hours if your Bollocks) you click into the chat room and view Boom's announcement. You've then got a straight hour or so to race for a fast time. Then drop a PM to him.

We did something similar to this over at GT3Times.

http://www.gt3times.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4355

It took place on a Saturday night at 8pm (GMT). We had been grouped as either "Nerds" or "Cool Dudes" before hand. The Nerds were slower, but had faster cars to pick from. So we knew what class of (arcade) car we were in but didn't know the track until the race started. We then had a 10 minute practise, then a 12minuteperiod in which to get a 3 lap race, and then 2 5 laps races for which we had 18 mins each. The results had to PM'd to the admin (GT3Emperor) in between races so that he knew we only used the alloted time. It worked really well.

This sounds like an awsome idea AO :D

I'm really disappointed that I won't likely be able to run it, my parents are staying over on friday night for a christmas shin-dig on saturday :(

Too bad ...

Well, that's fine, that they are coming over. Kick them out to go find breakfast (or dinner) and race with us for an hour. :D

On an interesting note, I've been racing against a particular racer for almost a year now and through IM we just did an Instant race. In every race that he and I have run, he's always come out ahead of me. Granted in the time we've been racing, I've improved a bit and he has as well.

He picked the car, I picked the track and we gave ourselves an hour. Fastest hour I can remember that I've had in a while. At the end of the hour, we both uploaded a time. I was just a hair bit faster than he was. I figured I'd be off by 1/4 to 1/2 second but managed just over a 1/10 second win.

Very interesting results.

Famine was a nerd?!? :odd:

I'll try and do this but 11:00am on Saturday with a 10 year old with new Video games to play will be tough. I have a trump card I can play to get track time.

Interesting idea, and under other circumstances, I'd likely give it a try, but I think you made the scheduling difficult for many by doing this on Christmas weekend.

Good luck!

I like the idea too. Unfortunately it's hard for me to race at an fixed hour, because of a busy familylife. :(

Another way to do something similar, would be to post the necessary information in one thread, and the specific race in another thread, that we wouldn't be allowed to read, before we were ready to race right after reading. :)

Yeah, I know. Not he same thing, just an idea. ;)

Hmm, sounds interesting but it's a no can do for me, I'm not even at my house Saturday 99% of the time.

Added a poll.

In response to the poll; if I were forced to go along with the 1 hour when everyone else races, then I couldn't do it most of the time because my real life is more important...

It really is a great idea but the timeing is wrong for me, if we had a day to get a time in that would be fine for me but it would defeat the object of what you want, to a rather large degree.

Sounds like a great idea, but on that time I have soccer games...so can't be at home...but good luck all and have fun racing.

I would agree with this whole thing but 1 hour just isnt enough for me to "do my best". I know I dont particpate much but still, I'm part of the series.

I didn't respond to the poll because at this point I just don't know. I'd like to run, and if I can manage to have a PS2 handy, and no conflicts at the appointed hour, I'm in. Just too soon to tell with a lot going on that weekend.

A great tune up for the eventual release of GT4 and "real" OLR. Then we'll have to commit to race at a particular time, jump in a car, do a few practice laps, and then run a race that counts.

I'm assuming this new format is not in addition to, but in place of, the current format.
Am I correct?

I would vote, "Cannot commit at this time".
I would know on the 23rd.
