Well if I'm not allowed to go with twin charging, then I am going to have to settle for Turbochargers as my preferred method of forced induction. Lag? yeh but its a very brief in most modest turbo's, the smaller ones being almost un-noticable. Turbo setups generally have a better power:weight than superchargers, although it depends on the job in hand, they both do their specific jobs very well.
They both generate power by increasing torque
A Turbo will generally create more torque, but at a delay. After the delay the torque will increase substantially in a short period of time, giving that kick feeling, The supercharger gives a more instantaneous and gradual delivery.
I love turbo cars for their fun torque curve, of course what's fun to one man is a chore to another.
Benefits of a supercharger: No lag, the cool whine, extra power, generally easier to fit and cheaper.
Benefits of a turbo: power out the wazoo, also adds torque, feeling that kick up your arse
