Why? Not only is your desktop or internet explorer on a 3D field (making it bigger) it's fun to mess around with!

Why do we play Gran Turismo 4? Because we can mess around with cars in a realistic manner!

This sounds like something that will needlessly use system resources.

And besides, isn't Windows Longhorn (or whatever the hell its called), supposed to have a 3D interface?

Windows Vista will have a 3d desktop under the guise "Aero".

Although it will be only in proffessional / full packages.

What a waste of resources. Just get a Virtual Desktop program to handle more than one fullscreen at a time. Even that's a waste of resources. Just get more than one monitor.
