There also comes a point where the story has been told, and there is no need to keep dragging it out. Look at "Castle", which had a central story arc running through it for six seasons - but once the Johanna Beckett story was finished, the show became aimless, trying to start up new story lines with mixed results as the writers tried to round it off in the course of a season.

As much as a network wants a show to grab ratings, the writers won't want to drag it out. The network probably set it up so that the show can reach 100 episodes and enter syndication.

A point that POI is nowhere near yet, with at least five active storylines I can think of off the top of my head - The Machine, Control, Shaw, Grace and possibly still Elias (Enrico Colantoni tweeted to say he hadn't received his phone call)...

The first three of those are imprisoned, or as good as, while the first two are, conversely, off their original leashes...

Edit: The Machine just answered my Tweet... weird.

i didn't like the ending, although it didn't end in a cliffhanger which was good, it just didn't have the same impact for as the season 3 ending for me.
it will be nice though to see where the show goes in the next season
 
Just finished Season 1 and it is amazing. Going to be starting Season 2 tonight...

We rewatched some of season 1 a while back having seen the season 4 finale and it's actually more impressive the second time round, weirdly...

That said, in seasons 2 & 3 (and 4) there will be times when you think "This can't get any more tense". That's usually around the time that the tension goes up an order of magnitude.

We were trying to pick our favourite episodes the other day and I think that season 4's Asylum is juuuuuust behind season 4's If-Then-Else. Just checking IMDB, If-Then-Else has 4,755 ratings and averages 9.9/10 :lol:

Hard to say what my favourite episode is, they are all so great! I really like the Elias storyline. One of my favourites was the episode (I don't take note of the names) where Carter had to
kidnap the 4 dons to protect them from Elias, despite one of them actually working for Elias. I also loved the one with the Armored Car and the undercover cop in the smuggling ring. The way S1 ended was great, and I never thought that Turing would be Root. Just typing this makes me want to start watching S2 right now!
 
Almost finished Season 2 and it is just amazing. Easily THE best TV show I have ever seen.

It is getting even better the more episodes I watch. Can't believe I'm at episode 20 or so and new characters are still being introduced!

Awesome.

Edit: Just finished off Season 2 and now into Season 3.
Kind of suprised The Machine is helping Root. Wondering when/if The Machine will help Root escape the facility she's in.

Didn't really like that they killed off Carter at the start of the Season, but I did like the way that Root was the Interface for The Machine. The thing with Vigilance is exciting as well, with a few episodes, particularly the end of the Season, focusing on Decima and Vigilance. Season was amazing so far and I really liked how the breifcase thing was sorted out with the first person Finch hired (Mr Dillinger I think his name was) betraying him and taking the laptop, only to be killed by Shaw after selling it to the Chinese, with the laptop then making it's way to China. There also seemed to be less flashbacks this season. Can't wait to get the last 2 episodes watched then move on to Season 4!

I take it something really big happens in the last 2 episodes? Probably to do with Decima and Vigilance?

So something big DID happen! Didn't expect Decima to be behind Vigilance, and I like the way The Machine set everyone up with new aliases so they wouldn't be spotted by Samaritan. Also watched the first 2 episodes of Season 4 and I like how the first number got them access to a secure network so they could communicate without Samaritan knowing and how they got a new base in the subway.

I know, just finished Season 4 and Its been getting better each season! Can't wait until Season 5!
 
I'm getting bits and pieces of the second season on FOXTEL at the moment. I like it so far, even though I can't really follow the grand narrative. I might have to pick up a season or two on DVD soon.
 
So I went to buy seasons one to three today - four hasn't been released here yet - and baulked at the price when I saw that it was close to $130. But then I saw that it was closer to $110 because the store was having a sale and I would save 20%. So I decided that I would get seasons one and two, since season three was the most expensive. But I somehow wound up taking seasons one and three to the counter, and season three got scanned first. Because the more expensive item went through first, I inadvertently tripped another deal that the store was running to buy two and get a third free, plus the 20% discount. So in the end, I somehow managed to get all three seasons for just $40.

Watching the first season, the producers clearly love UNLKE's War Stories album (and so they should; it's bloody fantastic). I just watched "Flesh and Blood", and "Burn My Shadow" was the perfect accompaniment for the conclusion.

all of UNKLE's work is excellent, its a shame they don't do more albums
 
I'm halfway through the second season - I just met Shaw - and there has only been one dud episode, "One Percent" (the one with the Mark Zuckerberg surrogate), mostly because of the pointless ten-minute detour to Russia (and I wonder how Ron Dennis feels about the MP4-12C being so easily compromised). I can't think of a single series that I have seen where the episodes are of such a consistently high quality from the outset; not even "Firefly" or "True Detective" managed it.

And I still think of Root as Fred, even if she's scarier than Illyria (bonus points if you understand the reference).

I just finished season three, and damn it, I want season four!
 
Pardon the triple post, but now that I have finished off the first three seasons and let it sink in, I can compose my thoughts about why it works so well.

I really put it down to John; I think that although he may not be the deepest character on television, he's certainly one of the most compelling since Malcolm Reynolds. In any other series, he'd be the charming rogue, cracking jokes at every opportunity and relying on his charm and his general sense of being right to get authorities to overlook his indiscretions, just like in any police procedural. I caught an episode of "Chicago PD" the other night, and it really stood out - so long as the hero is right, then it doesn't matter which laws he bends or rules he ignores; he will always be justified and he will never suffer the consequences.

But not John Reece; he's calm and methodical and his demeanour really reinforces the idea that there are actual stakes to play for. "RAM" stood out as a prime example of what the show would have been like had it observed the trope of the charming rogue. John simply wouldn't survive if he was anything other than the character he is. And it helps that the Machine cannot tell victim from perpetrator, which allows it to break out from the conventions of the genre.

There are a few little issues here and there:
The HR storyline tends to drag a little. They killed Szymanski, but then neglected it. Then they killed Beecher, and followed through with the story arc. I can't help but think that Szymanski and Beecher could have been merged and let the story progress a little more naturally.

And the audience needed something to work with in the Vigilance story; having them as a Decima false flag operation to get Samaratin online was a good twist, but it just came out as an exposition dump. We needed some evidence that all was not as it seemed; something easy enough to overlook, but the kind of detail that you can latch onto even if you don't know why. Setting Collier up as the public face of Vigilance, but receiving intelligence or instructions from someone else was a good start, but it came too late.

I'm watching a re-run from the first season of "How I Met Your Mother" where Ted joins a dating agency that claims to use the most advanced computer algorithm on the market to match potential partners together. Barney also attempts to join but is kicked out by the owner when he attempts to use the dating agency to pick up women.

Why is this creepy?

The owner is Control.
