I was wondering if you guys (and girls) could help me with this odd computer problem....

I just bought a Mercury TV Tuner Card, a cheap and cheerful one of the website below...they seem to sell well with no problems.

https://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Name=tv+card

I got it and it all looked ok, in tact and no damage, followed the instructions putting into a pci slot etc etc.... powered on and I was expecting the add new hardware wizard to come up.... well it didnt! I looked in hardware manager and its not there...

I tried different PCI slots.... pushed it in tightly... tried plugging in the tv ariel to see if it would make it detect....no luck.

Which brings me to, is it the card..... or my computer (which I doubt cause its only a month old).

I dont believe that a card can just 'not work!'.... what could be the problem...
Im going to try it on a second computer and I fear that if it does work then whats wrong with my computer!

Im running an AMD ATHLON 64 3200 on an ECS Nforce 4 A939 motherboard.... there is no other PCI cards in apart from my graphics card in the express slot (radeon x550)

Can anyone please help!!!

Many Thanks, Robin :)

In your bios - Is the Resource Allocation set to Auto ?.. It's usually named something like "PnP/PCI Configurations" with a subset called something like "Resource Controlled by" which should be set to Auto (ESCD)...

That should be enabled - and if Windows doesn't find the card then - it's probably fubar.. Also - When your PC boots, the white rectangle that shows before the Windows Boot session, you can see what resources are allocated and what cards are installed...

Thanks for the quick reponse Flerbizky 👍

I tried all the stuff you said and the computer is setup to the proper settings and the TV card still didnt work...

Then I had an idea.... I took an old PCI 56k modem of the shelf and plugged it into the computer just to see which was making the problem... sure enough the add hardware wizard came up right away basically telling me that THE COMPUTER'S PCI SLOTS WERE NOT THE PROBLEM....

....Which means that the tv card is buggered which is really annoying because it came so quick and physically looks undamaged... now ive got to go to the effort of the dreaded 'returning internet goods' task which makes all shiver with fear!

I will try the tv card one last time on a friends computer tomorrow but im about 99% sure now that the card is at fault.... oh well :indiff:

Thanks for the help,

Robin
