Hi all,

I’ve had some spare time recently and decided to spend it replaying GT2. One issue I’ve always had with GT2 is the AI. They’re very easy to beat, and I also dislike how the opponents tend to stay packed together all the time (except in endurance races). This wasn’t the case even in GT1.

So I went digging around the internet for any AI-related codes I could find. Most of the codes I found had no explanations, so I experimented to understand what they actually do.

Below are my findings.

Codes tested on NTSC 1.2:

1. Global multiplier
  • Increases the speed of all opponents
80046F6C 02BE
80046F78 01FE
80046F84 1000 (1000 is the default value, higher = tougher AI)

2. AI opponents speed boost
  • Per-car value (starting grid positions 5-1)
801DEB00 00
801DECC0 7F
801DEE80 7F
801DF040 7F
801DF200 FF (higher = tougher AI)

3. AI opponents speed and handling boost (?)
  • Per-car value (starting grid positions 5-1)
  • Has noticeably less impact than the previous setting
801DEB01 00
801DECC1 7F
801DEE81 7F
801DF041 7F
801DF201 FF (higher = tougher AI)

4. Catch-up settings (?)
  • Not fully sure about this one
  • Seems to be per-car (starting grid positions 5-1) catch-up behavior
  • Setting this to FFFF makes opponents move backwards from the start
801DEC28 0000
801DEDE8 0000
801DEFA8 0000
801DF168 0000
801DF328 0000 (lower = tougher AI)

5. Physics tweak
  • Appears to affect both player and AI
  • Makes all cars less grippy overall
  • Personally not a fan, since it makes tire compounds feel almost indistinguishable
80046F34 10CC (higher value = less grip)

6. Opponents grip level (?)
  • Seems to be per-car grip value (starting grid positions 5-1)
  • Changing this doesn’t have a huge impact
801D59E2 FFFF
801D5AB2 FFFF
801D5B82 FFFF
801D5C52 FFFF
801D5D22 FFFF (higher = more grip)

7. Opponents car weight (?)
  • Likely a per-car stat (starting grid positions 5-1)
  • Feels like it increases or decreases car weight
801D59AA 0000
801D5A7A 0000
801D564A 0000
801D5C1A 0000
801D5CEA 0000 (lower = less weight)

If anyone can explain the codes marked with (?), or correct anything I got wrong, I’d really appreciate it.
