The list is sorted from high to low hp. However the hp / kg ratio varies. Sometimes a car in he middle may have the highest hp to weight ratio.

I'm finding this game to be hard / challenging for my skill level if I race using cars from the list with matching hp. One mistake and you won't catch up.

It would be great if instead of a "typical opponents" list PD had a "recommended car" list ranging from easy to extremely hard.

Is it always possible to win using any of the cars with the same stats as the typical opponents list?

Also what tires do they use?

You can win with cars way below the level of the typical opponent if you're good enough. A lot of people did it in the Historical series (expert series), where I think the 2J Chapparal had like 900 HP and 800 KG, and people used cars like the Camaro RM which had about 550 HP and 1050 KG. If your having trouble, why not just make your car slightly better than the opposition. No one likes losing, but everyone enjoys a good challenge.

I believe that they always have the maximum allowed tyres (but I've never personally seen them with Racing Soft?).

They also vary in the tuning in some events, Vitz/Yaris comes to mind. I had my Yaris tuned to double the power, still had more to get from it, and they still took me on the Fuji straight.....

I'm not having trouble (he protested) :)

I like it, I find it challenging. Doing the seasonal events using the restrictions recommended by members has proved to be a lot of fun. So I started doing it with the A-Spec events which were boring when I was just blowing away the AI.

But I just want to know for sure that you can always win using typical opponents specs.

Only thing is I'm not sure what tires they use. Sports hard?

The only way I know of to find out what tires the AI uses is to enter one event in the series, start the race and quit after a few seconds. Then pull up the replay, switch the view to one of the AI cars, and display all the on-screen data. Over to the left it should say "Comfort: Soft" or whatever.

This is how I figured out why my highly tuned R32 Vspec II kept getting smoked in the Tuning Car GP.

Or you could check out calan_svc's very cool GT5 Matchmaker spreadsheet. It lists the tires that the opposing cars use in each race: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=145177
