*Team moved due to group draw restrictions

Qualified to playoffs through Nations League results

So the way the draw works is that there's seven pots.

* The finalists pot contains the four teams which qualified through to the Nations Cup final - England, Portugal, Switzerland and Netherlands. This is to put them into a group with five teams (A-D) so that they have a matchday free for the Nations Cup final. They go to position one.

The rest of the teams are ranked by their final Nations League rankings.
* Pot 1 contains the six remaining top ten-ranked sides, for groups E-J. They also go into position one.
* Pot 2 contains the next ten, for position two
* Pots 3, 4 and 5 contain the next ten, for positions three, four and five
* Pot 6 contains the bottom five-ranked sides, to be drawn into position six in groups F-J

There are some complicating factors.
* UEFA 2020 will not have a single host. Instead, 12 nations will host the matches. The draw must not place more than two host nations in one group. These nations are: Azerbaijan, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Spain.
* For political reasons, the following teams must not be drawn into the same group:
Spain/Gibraltar
Bosnia and Herzegovina/Kosovo
Serbia/Kosovo
Armenia/Azerbaijan
Russia/Ukraine

* There can be a maximum of two "extreme winter" nations in one group. These are: Belarus, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, Ukraine.

* There can only be one team pairing with "excessive travel distance" in one group. These are:
Azerbaijan with: Gibraltar, Iceland, Portugal
Iceland with: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan with: Andorra, England, Faroe Islands, France, Gibraltar, Iceland, Malta, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Wales

This all will doubtless see some group shuffling at some point of the draw!

1.
Switzerland
2. Denmark
3. Republic of Ireland*
4.
Georgia
5. Gibraltar

Group E
1. Croatia
2. Wales
3. Slovakia
4. Hungary
5. Azerbaijan*
The same applies here. Azerbaijan was drawn into Group D, but as they're hosts (b€cau$€ of cour$€ th€y ar€), and ROI and Denmark were already there, they got moved to Group E and the next-drawn eligible team - Gibraltar - took the Group D spot.
Group F
1. Spain
2.
Sweden
3. Norway
4. Romania
5. Faroe Islands
6. Malta

Group G
1. Poland
2. Austria
3. Israel
4. Slovenia
5.
Macedonia
6. Latvia*
Extreme winter! Latvia was drawn into Group F, but Norway and Faroe Islands are both extreme winter nations, so Latvia was moved to Group G and the next-drawn eligible nation got the Group F spot. Lovely, warm Malta :D

Is this some kind of weird card game?

Latvia attacked Malta with extreme winter. It was successful.

You wait until the playoffs...

The Nations League is a very good idea, but it has been implemented and integrated with the European Championships in a profoundly stupid fashion.

Just been listening to 5 Live whilst on the way back from picking up some goodies and the presenter was having heated discussion with a caller in regard to how the Nations League and Euro Qualifiers were integrated. Suffice to say I have absolutely no idea how it all works, and seemingly neither di the pair of them

I can explain it, but you won't want me to. Nonetheless:

Nations League:
* 4 Leagues (top league = top 12 teams; bottom league = bottom 16 teams), 4 Groups in each League
* 4 Group Winners from top League go to Nations League Final event. This isn't directly related to qualifying in any way.
* All Group Winners (16) get guaranteed Euro 2020 Playoff spot.
* Nations ranked by Nations League finishing position for Euro 2020 qualifying draw (top league = teams 1-12; bottom league = teams 40-55)

Euro 2020 Qualifying
* 10 Groups, drawn in seven pots
* Nations League top League winners (4) in one pot, next 6 top league teams in pot 1; next 10 teams in each subsequent pot. Five teams in bottom pot.
* Qualifying happens as normal. Yay!
* Top 2 teams in each Group qualify for finals (20 teams).
* Any remaining Nations League Group winner advance to Playoffs (as noted above).
* Any Nations League Group winner that qualifies directly surrenders playoff place to the next lowest non-qualifying team in their Nations League League (not Group). If none are available, place goes to next lowest non-qualifying team in the next League down.
* Playoffs seeded, drawn and played for last 8 places.

Clear as mud then! The caller was arguing that the winner of the Nations League automatically gets a spot at Euro 2020!

Nope. No automatic spots now - the defending champions don't get one, and nor do the hosts. Mind you, there's 12 hosts... or none.

The 2020-2021 Nations League may function as a pre-qualifier for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a similar way..

What a match for Wednesday's Liam Palmer to make his debut in (aged 27). Poor sod must have thought it was the Jos Luhukay era all over again.

It's a pity Kazakhstan is not in the EU, otherwise the Scotland squad could have just stayed there...

Netherlands beat Belarus 4-0 and Belgium beat Russia 3-1, Northern Ireland also beat Estonia 2-0.

Nitpicking but is the team still called Macedonia? I thought they changed their name to North Macedonia at the request of Greece.

The country may have changed names, but the team is still Macedonia. In fact I think its entry name is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (or FYR Macedonia), but balls to that.

Just to point out, but a group containing Portugal, Ukraine and Serbia is currently being led by Luxembourg...

Impressive by England and by Sterling, who is becoming a fantastic player. Ireland's young player of the year Declan Rice made his debut for England.

Wales 1-0 Slovakia, Wales get their qualifying campaign off to a winning start thanks to a Daniel James goal just 5 minutes into his debut. 👍

Scotland have a must win game away in San Marino up next and then Northern Ireland v Belarus on tonight plus Netherlands v Germany.

This has to be a contender for Understatement of the Year already.

If Scotland don't beat San Marino tonight, there will be 30 or so Scotsmen applying for asylum in European this evening.
