This is awesome news :D

I know i'm outnumbered on here but i'm happy that millipede and balls wont be in charge.

Not a fan of trouble causing snp though.
But not outgunned.

UKIP seem to pull more votes than Lib Dems and SNP combined, yet have 1 seat so far. Is this the time for a change?

The future of Ukip is in the balance today after 3.5million people backed the party at the polls but Nigel Farage looks set to fail in his bid to take a seat in the Commons and quit as leader.

In an extraordinary show of support the party became Britain's third major party as it secured as many votes as both the SNP and Liberal Democrats combined yet is likely to be left with just two MPs.

It's a golden chance for Labour to stand up for the working class once more (and the "sub working class", whatever the PC term is for that nowadays).

Lose their confidence at your peril.

Shock news of the morning - Ed Miliband is preparing his resignation statement... after he's finished his bacon sandwich.

Thanks to the SNP/Tory split, the UK now looks like Maggie Simpson.

I think there's room for a new party especially when most have been hit hard. A secular democratic party.

What a result :):):)

So many reasons to be cheerful!

Labour will not govern again for at least a generation (if ever) - without the Scottish vote they'll never get a majority :)

SNP have loads of seats, but will have zero power or influence :)

UKIP get loads of votes, but no seats :)

I do feel a bit sorry for the Libs, but that's that's what happens when you have to give up your principles to hold some power.

I guess we'll get a year, or maybe 2, of stability whilst the Tory whips keep the party under control... after that, depends how long the Eurosceptics take to start stirring things up.

You do remember it only took 26 years from starting the party to forming a government. You are a little hopeful there I think.

Farage has not been elected, Conservatives hold the seat 18000 from 16000. Douglas Carswell is currently the only UKIP seat holder and is probably on track to be UKIP leader.

Douglas Carswell, one of the Tory defectors from last year is probably closest to fitting that bill. I think he only really joined because of his euroscepticism - he is pretty liberal and pro-immigration by Tory/UKIP standards. If Farage doesn't win his seat and resigns as he's said he would, I imagine Carswell would go for the leadership - could be interesting to see if that would change the party and/or lead to greater divisions within it.

Although I did read at some point before I dozed off that if Farage tenders his resignation, the party might not actually accept it.......

Very different times, socially & politically.

Labour are dead without the Scottish seats.

Tories have reached the practical majority of 323 seats, so it's all but over. Pollsters eating humble pie by the truckload I'd imagine........hopefully means they won't get to dictate the debate as much come next election.

I'm glad there is a going to be a majority government, makes it much easier to get on with running the country. It will be also interesting to see what the Conservatives can do without the Lib Dem's as they often stated their hands were tied with many issues to appease Clegg.

I'm also surprised that UKIP didn't win more seats, especially Farage's own. It was looking like they would be the 3rd party at one point in the run up to today. I guess people saw sense and didn't want to end up with a coalition again so Farage has a point when he stated the loss of UKIP was likely due to the rise of the SNP so people in England voted Tory.

With regards to Labour I think the old 'chose the wrong brother thing' will come back into the spotlight. Sure Miliband is qualified but he didn't have the charisma of David and certainly not the popularity of Sturgeon.

And yeah the run up polls appears to have been total nonsense this time, goodness known where they got their info from!

UKIP must be feeling a bit sore - 12.6% of the popular vote, 3.8 million votes and just one MP... meanwhile, with just 38% of that number of votes, the SNP are sitting on 56 seats! As @KSaiyu pointed out above, UKIP have more votes that the Lib Dems and the SNP combined... if vote share translated directly into MPs, UKIP would have 82 MPs.

If it were straight PR, we would have had the following result: CON 239, LAB 198, UKIP 82, LD 50, SNP 31, GRN 25

Incidentally, of those 6 major parties, all but the Liberal Democrats actually got a higher % of the vote than in 2010, with the Conservatives scoring the smallest increase (0.7%) and UKIP by far the highest (9.6%). The Lib Dems are down 15.2%... that's gotta hurt.

Ah, Farage has resigned - but has not ruled standing for the resulting leadership election! That's stretching his promise a fair bit........

He didn't resign though... just said he was going to have a summer holiday and think about standing again. Not quite what he'd promised.

Nick Clegg has resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrats...

Announcing a leadership contest is as good as resigning... that said, who else is likely to win a leadership contest for UKIP if not Farage?

Clegg has just resigned (@Touring Mars tree'd me, sorry :) ). First by-election of the new government. Imagine if the Liberals didn't hold it? Every party's "big names" who were ousted last night (and there were a good few) will be up for that. Vince Cable will stand there, I suspect.

Results as they stand now with 9 seats left to call;

Not resigned as an MP surely? He's just standing down as leader of the party...

With Farage more like that thing Yakuza do with their fingers.

My town has the only UKIP seat. Thinking of going independent or forming an official party.
