Noticed this on Pistonheads...

If you thought that the Mercedes SLS was pretty tasty, this new Mercedes SLS GT3 race car will surely have you drooling like a toddler.

The GT3-spec car is intended for private customer teams, with deliveries starting this autumn as Mercedes hopes to have the SLS GT3 homologated in time for the 2011 season.

There are no specific details on the power or performance of the car, as the FIA will set the final specifications in accordance with its 'balance of performance' principle, but the SLS will essentially use the same dry-sump 6.3-litre V8 as in the road car.

The bodywork has been extensively revised for the SLS GT3, with a prominent carbon front splitter, a beefy rear wing, and cooling vents in the bonnet, on the trailing edges of the front wings and air intakes for brake cooling on the side skirts.

Other exterior modifications include fuel filler pipes integrated onto the C-pillar and a flat undertray.

The SLS racer's springs and dampers are fully adjustable, as are the anti-roll bars, track width and wheel camber. The steering has been tuned to make it more direct, and there is speed-sensitive servo assistance.

Inside, all the usual competition features are present, including a full roll cage, na integrated fire extinguisher system, a HANS-ready race seat and an information display that informs the driver of speed, engine rpm, operating temperatures, lap times and the selected gear. The steering wheel is also replaced with an open-topped item that allows the driver a clearer view of the centre console.

The back of the stock SLR is bad enough...

Are those exhaust pipes in the b-pillar? Or what?

That's just answered the question of 'which car will you first drive around the 'ring when GT5 is released?' for me.

Thanks for posting Stotty. 👍

Looks awesome and very well executed. Hopefully this gives Ferrari a nudge to do something similar to the 458. Shall we assume PD has got this covered as it's their cover car?! :sly:

No, the exhaust pipes exit at the back, just above the rear diffuser. Thoes things on the B-pillars are the fuel inlets, if you look at other GT1, 2 and 3 spec race cars as well as race cars from plenty of other race series and you'll see them in similar places on plenty of other cars.

Hm. Seeing as what I've wanted to say has already been said for the most part, I'll express myself in morse code...

- .... .. ... / ...- . .... .. -.-. .-.. . / .. ... / 🤬 / .- .-- . ... --- -- . -.-.-- .-.-.-

Just wanted to be different, and seeing as that's code...I found a loophole around the AUP.

Do you want to put money on that?

No. Gosh.

EDIT: I'm going to assume that you know morse, and in which case I'm going to ask if I've messed anything up. I haven't written in morse in quite a while.

I must say I don't like the look of the thing, I'm not a huge fan of the normal SLS although I certainly don't hate it. Once it's been prepped with all the downforce creating goodies, it just doesn't look right to me.

I think Sphinx was hinting that you should have not used the profanity, not asking if you had typed it correctly... 💡

I don't see the big deal. The normal Gullwing doesn't look that special. This one just looks like we put it through GT2's Racing Modification.

Good to know I'm not the only one who really doesn't see whats so special about it.

That thread title should be changed to have SLS GT3 in it. If I went searching for this thread I wouldn't be able to find it due to the undescriptive title.

The car was in the recent VLN Race on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Pretty impressive but was involved in the first lap incident, driven by Paul Di Resta or Thomas Jager if I'm not mistaken...

I don't know... I mean, it's not ugly, but...

I really can't see anything really good or unique about its design, it looks pretty average to me. I was hoping the race version of this car to bring something fresh and appealing, but instead they just did what they had to do to make it a race car and everyone's praising this GT3 to be oh so freakin' gorgeous. Sorry, I just can't see it.

As I said, I don't find it ugly. Just... not beautiful or even close to that. It's a meh kind of car. 💡
