Hi Jordan,

Just signed up on behalf of a friend of mine to give you a heads-up. For one reason or another he's ONLY able to browse the web on his Xbox 360. He frequents GTP and has done for years but last week something changed and now X360 IE will not connect to the site at all.

As his xbox is his only means of accessing the web and he doesn't have/want a twitter account he's unable to let you know himself so I said I'd swing by and post in the support forum.

He's based in the USA (I'm from the UK). I also tried to access www.gtplanet.net from my 360 to see if it was a "local" issue or one specific to his machine. I had the same result as him.

"Can't connect to website. Website is down, or can't connect to internet."

The App makes the following suggestions:

Make sure address is correct.
Refresh page.
Check all network cables are plugged in. It's wireless.
Restart router.

Done all the above, no luck.

Are you aware of this issue, do you think you'll be able to resolve it?

Thanks

Cheex

Having just tried to open up GTP on IE from my desktop, and failed, I would assume its a problem with IE. It seems to work fine on Chrome, though.

It's odd though, just last night I was on my One and it was working fine.

Thanks very much for trying that! My friend says everything was working fine until Thursday, I noticed in the site update log there were some changes made on Thursday also. He's checked and he is using the correct https:// address not the old http:// one!

I use IE, and I was able to connect with no problems whatsoever. Maybe it is an issue with your ISPs?

I suspect the problem is related to our recent transition to HTTPS. After the transition, GTPlanet is no longer compatible with many older browsers (including IE6) which do not support today's security protocols and encryption algorithms. Although I don't know anything about the Xbox 360 IE App and there is no developer documentation available for me to verify this with, it is almost certainly the cause of the issue.

Unfortunately, there is no way this can be fixed. Unless Microsoft publishes an update for 360's IE app, it won't be usable with GTPlanet. Please send my apologies to your friend.

What version of IE and Windows are you using? IE7 and newer should not be affected.

Not that it bothers me much as I don't use it, but to confirm, it is IE6. It's no wonder it worked on the One as it's probably a more recent version of the app.

I doubt MS will update their browser app.
They will most likely say, get a Xbone as it has the latest and greatest technologies.

Back again... my friend informs me that the Xbox 360 IE app was updated today... in fact... rather than typing it all out again... lemme just post what he said:

"The IE app updated this morning so right away I thought maybe GTPlanet would work but no dice. But I still don't think MS has to do anything because I've been able to access many other sites starting with https: all along.

Tyger, could you please let Jordan know in that same thread you started that I'm able to access other https: sites, such as Google and craigslist?"

HTTPS is not universal, and works over a variety of protocols and encryption algorithms depending on how the server is configured and what type of encryption that the browser supports. Many large sites do continue to support those older security protocols that I mentioned above, because dropping them would affect millions of people at their scale. I'm not sure how they mitigate the security risks, though.
