upgrading from old PS3 to new PS3 hardware - moving my data

This is an entirely new topic for me, while I am entirely confused by what can be found on the internet.

I am preparing a multi monitor setup, being in the process of collecting two new PS3 slim to my old PS3 (the big, black glossy model from way back then).

I would like, to move from the old PS3 to a new one with my entire account and all data.

Is this possible? I read, that certain games (GT5 being the most important for me to work) do not allow for this?

What would be the correct procedure, to move my account and all game data, saves, etc from the old to the new system, before starting to built the multi monitor setup?

Any pointers to a non geeky description for beginners is highly appreciated.
 
Yes It's possible through the data transfer utility in the ps 3 menu.

All you need is a short Ethernet cable to connect both ps3s

Before you start the transfer make sure you delete all unnecessary data from the original ps3 so your transfer is as short as possible. I had about 100g to transfer and it took 4 hrs. Wish I knew this before I did mine.

The data transfer is a bit dodgy, you never know how long it'll take. But It's the only way to make a photocopy of your old ps3.

So I could possibly erase all installed game data files first and only keep save data and alike?

This looks to be a long procedure on the weekend.
 
No don't uninstall game data, otherwise you'll have to redownload it. It will be transferred.
So will the save games. It's still a good idea to save your save files to a usb.

Delete stuff like mp3s videos etc. Maybe game data for games you're never going to play again.

May I also have a way of copying game data from the main PS3 to the new ones, to prevent from having to upgrade all PS3s with the current patches over the internet or is updating each PS3 separately the only way to go?

Now I have another issue, after connecting the just unpacked Logitech z906 - no optical audio transfer between the devices!
I will have a look, where on the forum this fits best for trouble shooting - can find a few descriptions of the same issue, but no solution described :-(

Data transfer will install all patches onto new ps3
 
Will the data on the original PS3 be automatically erased or do I end up with two PS3 hardware with fully installed games and fully working save games and accounts?
This would be ideal, to just "clone" one PS3 to the other two, to make the whole multi monitor setup complete.

If it only would take 1 hour, to clone the original 40GB PS3 to one new PS3 slim 160GB, it would take much, much less time than installing, setting up and updating the new PS3 hardware via internet (basically a total affair of about three to four hours).

A quick off topic:
Can anybody point me to some trouble shooting of optical audio out not working with Logitech 5.1 speakers? I spent the whole yesterday evening, searching the internet, but there is not ONE solution to the problem!
I also can't find a place here on GTPlanet, to properly discuss this in a separate thread.

Basically audio works fine via HDMI (in two channel only of course), but the optical connection seems not to be established between PS3 and Logitech speakers (end of optical cable is transmitting a signal, but no sound).

I will test the same setup with the new PS3 hardware on the weekend + a set of new optical cables.
 
I had to change PS3's and it worked fine to just copy the data onto a USB stick and save it onto the new PS3 it should work for you as well

Data from original ps3 does not get erased. However it will ask you to deactivate your ps store accounts on it.

Sounds great - so I can follow this route:

1. transfer all data: old PS3 40GB -> PS3 slim No1

2. transfer all data: old PS3 40GB -> PS3 slim No2

3. transfer all data: old PS3 40GB -> PS3 slim No3

4. format old PS3 40GB (will be released from gaming and be made a simple DVD player or media center, etc)

5. deactivate main account on PS3 slim No2 and create new bogus multi monitor account

6. deactivate main account on PS3 slim No3 and create new bogus multi monitor account

7. connect three new PS3 slim via ethernet switch and start multi monitor racing in GT5 with PS3 slim No1 being the host with main account intact and No2 and No3 being clients only for multi monitor gaming in GT5.

No internet connection or slow downloads for upgrades and DLCs will be needed in the process.

If this thinking is correct, everything should be a walk in the park ;-)
I hope, the weekend is rainy, so enough time to fix this!
 
Sounds good to me. I have no idea how the multi monitor setups work. Theres a thread on it somewhere on the forum. Would be good idea to check it out before you start.

Yes, there is a fantastic thread by Mr Latte here on the forum, describing the setup for multi monitor (which is why I won't ask questions about it around here).

I am looking forward, to see, how this data stuff turns out …
