Will the PS3 backup feature archive my GT5 save and restore it on my new SSD? I wouldn't really want to start all over again.

Also, does anyone know of a site with good instructions on how to insert an SSD into the PS3?

I think so.
the only way to transfer a gt save at the moment is the data tranfer utilily in the xmb. And you do need 2 ps3 to do it. so in your case what you should do is.

1. find a friend with a ps3, udate firmaware an gt5 so you both have the same config on the two ps3.
2. tranfer your data on your friends ps3.
3. install your new ssd in your ps3
4. format your ps3
5 transfer data from your friends ps3 to yours.

I finally upgraded my Release Phat's 60GB to a 140GB. I just used the Backup Utility. Nothing lost.
As for how to replace the HDD it should be in the Manual as Sony has no issues with you changing the HDD at all.

Quite simple really, it's just one screw to remove and it just slides out(At least for the Phats anyway I don't know about the Slims)

All right. I have a Phat one so that should be good. Just to be clear: You had GT5 installed, and you are now playing with the same GT5 save on your new disk? It restored without problems?
Thanks

OH yes was well into it. fully installed etc. Just did it this past weekend. Believe me if it I had lost everything you wanna bet the 60 woulda went right back in there.:sly:

It is mostly just time consuming. I just stuck an old 80GB IDE HDD I had lying around in a USB External Case I had. The trick was trying to find an app that would let me format it to FAT32(Win7 won't let you)

After that it was about an hour and a half backing it up and the same to restore it.

The HDD you replace it with doesn't matter what filesystem it's using the PS3 will format it anyway. Then just go to System Settings>Back Up Utility and Restore.

what is this back up utility you speak of INSTG8R? I would like to update my hdd but do not want to loose my gt5 saved game and not put any of my mates out by asing to borrow a ps3 off them. Cheers, Tony.

Hmm sounds to complex for me. I might talk to a local guy here who does repairs and see what he thinks. I will have to make it clear to him that you cant just back up the gt5 save game with a usb or else i will be starting all over.

Aha, so I can just use an external harddisk for storing the backup, as long as it's formatted as FAT32? I have WinXP on a computer, so it should be no problem formatting it as FAT32.
Thanks a lot for helping :)👍

@xagt939

No you apparently cannot back up just your save games at this point(rumoured that soon we will be able too)

Nah it's not that hard any external USB HDD will do the job.

There is an App from HP that will easily allow you to format it to FAT32(after fighting Win7 a quick Google sorted that out)

The Backup Utility is under System Settings.

As I said it was more the time it took to actually do the back up and the restore to and from the PS3 was a long wait.

The process itself was pretty easy.

Yep that is the only condition for the External as that is the filesystem the PS3 uses.

So then if you back it up that way can u use it on other psn user names and then tranfer the cars over to you to have doubles?

I don't think that is possible. The Backup is "linked" to your console so it just puts back and exact copy of what you backed up.

The only thing it warned be about was that my PSN trophy data wouldn't be backed up and just synch it before hand.
