I am thinking of buying a new game from America because they are cheaper and I don't think the game will be released here in the UK. The only thing is, I don't know if it will work because I asked my dad and he said no because the US have a different TV setup. However I researched, and it said if you run a HDTV which is what I have, it will be fine. All I need is a bit of clarification!

PS3 is region free. As far as I know, any disc should work on any PS3. I have Japanese disks and they work without a single problem on my non Japanese PS3. The TV doesn't matter.

They work fine. It wasn't the case with the ps2 though, that was region locked. You have nothing to worry about on the ps3.

OK cheers for the quick reply, because my dad said something about our TV being PAL

No worries.UK Pal and US NTSC(?) are not an issue for hdmi. Even back in the day my old box telly had an option for US NTSC. The issue was PS2 was locked to region 2 so it wouldn't read the discs. PS3 games are region free.

If you have a CRT-TV, it has to be capable of 60hz and you'll need a special RGB cable, otherwise it will be black & white. If you have an HDTV it doesn't matter.

Something else to note: Download content will only work when it was purchased in the Store, fitting to the game's region (US Store for US disc for example). You can use it with any account on your PS3 though.

You don't need to do anything, the disc should load fine whether you're logged into your regular UK PSN or not. An American PSN account is just that, you get the US PSN store to browse and download demos etc.

I have a US, a Japanese and a Hong Kong account on my PS3. I start a download in any account and immediately logout and into another account while one or more downloads are active, download something else (puts it in cue of course) and into another account if I wish etc. The PS3 handles it fine, you don't even need to be logged in once a download is active.

If you wish for a foreign account, search online for a business of sorts (I pick hotels) from that country and use their address with post code and make up a name, I usually go with John Smith.

OK cheers mate, does that mean I have to buy playstation store vouchers from the countries the account is from or can I buy uk vouchers?

I think the only time using a Foreign game on a different PS3 is getting DLC for it. But if the game has its own portal, i dont know...

You have to buy the store country's currency equivalent. For example, if you wish to purchase something from the US store on a UK PS3, you have to buy a US PSN card. If you buy a UK card, then it will be useless on the US store.

This is correct, I bought stuff from the HK and the JP store like that without problem. Just have to find an online store that sells PSN card for the region you're looking for. I'm from Europe btw. Play-asia usually have card for all region.

I recently got an email from PSN stating I can use PayPal to add funds. I haven't looked into this yet. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

I'm not sure about paypal I never saw the option, after looking at it, it says you can only use a paypal account if it's in the same region as the disk.

I dunno if you're european or not but if you're european only some country are autorized to use paypal.

It will work on any tv. In the old days playing a a different region code would either not work at all or play in black and white. This was down to the playstation though not the tv. You could chip your ps to play different region on old tv's fine. The PS3 is deigned to run any region on any tv (I know someone who plays US games on his old TV). The only time you may get problems in my experience is with online codes. If you buy a US BF3 and try and play on your EU account for instance, the code won't work. You can get this sorted out by speaking to EA, not sure how you will go on with other developers.

EDIT: Just checked elsewhere online and they support what G.T.Ace said about CRT.

My understanding has always been that they would play on any tv and my limited experience backs that up.
To be ultra safe though, I would go with what Ace said.

Just to clarify for you, apart from the CRT you are definitely ok to play them. Bear in my what I have said about codes, DLC you may have the same problem with too.

Pretty much no CRT only plays PAL since like the mid 90's unless it was a small ultra cheap one. HDTV's play every SD video region.

Be aware that although 99.9% of PS3 games are region free some are not, recently the first ever region locked PS3 game was released so just check before you buy but you should be OK.

It was the 2nd White Knight chronicles game, released by Atlus. And i believe they are still the only ones to release region locked games anyone actually cares about. The Shin Megami Tensai fighting game i think has region locked versions as well.
