Use of ABS in Forza 4

I have seen that most of the best times on the leaderboards have driven their car with "ABS off". I have tried ABS on and off and so far have not reached different track times.

Why do you race with "ABS off"? In GT5 most drivers set the ABS to "1" (from 10) but still leaves them on.

I was also not able to "destroy" my tires by heavy breaking with ABS off. The tires just get hotter and hotter but then cool off very fast again. In real life a set of tyres must be dead, when you brake down from full speed without ABS several times. But I have activated "tyre wear". Strange.
 
I find the ABS in GT5 to be very unrealisitic, tyres lock up way to easy. I wouldn't say I am any faster with ABS off but I find I can break more progressivly instead of getting to a certain point and slamming on
 
I have a tendency to lock them up with ABS off but I have only raced with ABS off for a week now. Being said, if I hit a turn right and down shift at the appropriate times too, my braking distance is significantly shorter. I dropped about 6 seconds on Laguna Seca once I got it right. I use a controller and use manual without clutch. If you use automatic, I don't think using ABS makes a difference.

In real life, if you were two of the exact same cars and one had ABS and one didn't, the one without ABS would actually stop shorter IF you braked properly. But in emergency situations people just slam on the brakes which puts you in a skid and why we have ABS.

So not true.

Have you ever driven a car without ABS? The wheels don't just suddenly lock when you push the peddle a small amount like they do in GT5. A lot more pedal travel takes place and you really have to be applying a decent amount of force to get them to lock. Neither game is perfect but forza is closer in my opinion.
 
As an ultra bad at literally everything, i'm able to play Forza 4 without ABS (or no assists at all actually) and still do pretty good. In Gran Turismo 5, having assists off, makes every car spin out like crazy, or the brakes lock up, I can't do crap with assists off, which feels a lot more unrealistic to me.
 
Don't feel the difference really abs off isn't a problem in both games for me. I heard they changed something in GT5 latest patch too?

Just buy a half decent set of pedals and train your feet, or actually use the controller, it is very easy to modulate.

so because its harder its more realistic, I have a car that doesnt have abs and I have locked up once under heavy braking and thats with cheap tires aswell. GT5 is over the top when it comes to abs simuation
 
I play FM4 with no assists and full damage on. The only time I race with an assist is a driving line on a track I'm not comfortable on or if I'm in a new car I'm trying to get right, maybe even going for the fastest lap time. A track I know very well in a normal race like Laguna Seca or Sebring, I tend to race without any line, again unless I'm aiming for the fastest lap time (to brake later) or in a new car I'm not 100% with.

PD made changes, but I think someone was saying on GTPlanet, that a lot of the physics changes were only applied to arcade mode, and maybe online? The way PD patches things in is so weird and inconsistent, that when they finally do implement an improvement, or new feature, there is no telling what parts of the game it will actually effect. More often then not, it's the game modes that no one actually cares about.

Yeah, I was saying GT5 felt more unrealistic with the assists turned off. While it's true that in real life, a car can be more difficult to handle with no traction control or ABS, it feels very exaggerated in GT5. Especially on the SuperGT cars, which as far as I know, have no actual assists in their real life counterparts, but those race cars still stay glued to the road pretty well. In GT5, they slip and slide all over the place. Forza 4 has a more accurate representation of the SuperGT race cars.
 
I turn ABS off for the extra credits and old cars don't have it. GT 5 tried it off a few times and always spun out when trying to match ABS lap times so it stays on 1 in that game.
 
I run ABS 1 and all assists off and use a controller in GT5 and the game is easy. I run slower cars too. Online I usually finish towards the top or occasionally first. But Forza I ran with ABS on, all assists off with a controller and the game is more difficult and online is impossible. I usually fit around dead last. With abs off now I don't do a whole lot better.

Being said, I find GT5 a lot easier to play. Comparing which is more realistic? No clue cause i dont race in real life. My car is a manual and doesn't have ABS and I can control if fine when I have a little fun with it. But I also run soft summer tires and a stiff suspension.

And to the person who thinks the Super GT cars are more realistic in Forza cause they are easy to use, i hppe you are joking. People who drive those cars are professionals so it is easy to make them look easy to drive. I bet in real life a novice couldnt keep it straight at all.

Yes, but when the professionals who spend hundreds of hours in these cars, say they have a lot of grip and it's pretty hard to lose control in one, it's pretty easy to understand what they mean by that. Being that they are experts on these cars, they are more then capable of stating opinions about the cars without getting their own personal experience and skill involved in the equation.

What I am trying to say is, a rookie to these race cars would still find them easy to manage after a short time behind the wheel of one.

My point still stands, Forza still represents the cars more accurately.

Do you really honestly believe the steering and suspension or brakes handle the same way a pedestrian car does? First time you are at 150 mph in a race car and have to hit the brakes to turn like you do in forza, it ain't going to turn out like you think. Just cause a pro finds something easy doesn't mean you can assume it is easy for everyone.

Please, show me one interview where a pro goes and says what you said above but also say how anyone can do it as you are alluding to. If you can, ill apologize and send you a 4 million dollar car in forma. If not, quit assuming.
 
Obviously you didn't calibrate your brake peddle by pressing it all the way down atleast once at the start of the race in GT5. If you don't calibrate it, it's overly sensitive. After that you brake pretty much like you do in your real life car with most breaking done with 20 - 40% compression kinda like how I remembered it to be in Forza 2.

Read what I said more closely, I never said what you are claiming I did. It's one thing to drive one of these cars and not have it fly into a wall, it's something else to do it and compete on the same level as the pro's doing this for a living. I don't know how else I can make it anymore clearer. I guess reading is just hard for you.

I don't even get your point, none of what you brought up has anything to do with what i'm talking about. You're going way off topic and it's pretty annoying at this point.
 
I dunno if its just me but with abs off i feel as if i can break later then what i would when i had abs on. I also find it easier when i slow down for a high speed turn, all i would have to do is slowly press the breaks just enough to where it doesnt really feel like your losing speed.
 
Ah you did change the subject and I didn't notice. I was talking about anyone driving and then you changed it to talking about rookie drivers. My bad and I do apologize for getting into this discussion. It is indeed pointless.

As you've found, the game doesn't appear to simulate flat spots at all. Tire wear is such a vestigial feature of the game anyway, so it's not surprising.

Without flat spots or significant tire wear, there's no real risk to racing with the ABS off; it just takes practice. I've left it off since release day.

When I had my DFGT I could not drive anything in GT5 without ABS set to at least 1. And yes I calibrated. Actually this was/is a common issue in GT5 with the DFGT (maybe other wheels/pedals) where no-brake to full-lock was in 5% of pedal travel. After reading of the problem in a number of threads throughout the Internet I gave up and set ABS to 1.

You probably did not set the brake bias witch causes the car to use an unrealistic 5:5 brake bias that makes the car almost impossible to drive. I set all my cars to 7:4

In the real world its not that simple, the point at which the ABS is triggered varies significantly from car to car (and ABS system to system).
