Sorry but you are giving way too much credit to many of the people who are racing online.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that 80% of my racing online has been totally clean.
I raced for 2 hours yesterday and only one other driver couldn't stand that I was 4 seconds faster in the same car. So he pushed me off all the time and brake tested me several times (trying to give me penalties).

But the number of these fools are declining, and in races I often choose I know quite a lot of the drivers there, and we have a lot of respect for each other. I've had some very very nice battles with some fast racers out there.

If you get knocked off, just stay calm and don't take revenge. Otherwise others drivers will see you as a punter etc etc.

I'm not doing the Need for Speed view ...
It would be nice however to directly get the outside view with the press of a button, similar to for instance the rear mirror view (going through all the view with the select button takes too much time during racing).

It is possible but not with GT5p.

This is how it looks in GT4.

Interesting. I remember seeing this type of setup a few times from convention floors for both Sony and Subaru but always figured it required some special tweaks with hardware. I'm failing to understand how buying multiple copies of the game with multiple PS2/3s would accomplish this though. I get how you get an image on each screen but can't understand how you synch all three to be the same image/race/game?

I used to crash at a friend's house in Japan who was a PC Sim racer. He had a setup like this, but he built it himself on his windows machine with multiple video cards and screens using windows multiple screen support. Still that was one machine though, not multiple ones.

It works by networking the 3 PS2's together, running one of them as the master (center view) and the others as slaves (side views).
