So, I bought a Canon EOS 30D after wanting to do this photography lark properly for a while... and I'm learning. I think I understand the basics, but knowing what a clutch is, what brakes do, how engines work... and how to actually drive is another thing.

A quick experiment in lighting and exposure.
You can tell it's quick, because I didn't worry about out the background!

Thai Elephant study. Second shot is a 100% crop.

Someone has recommended I HDR this, so I'm going to retake it.
The Canon has exposure bracketing and burst mode is pretty quick, so I'll let you know.

Obligatory flower shot. I like this, the black dot is a bug, he didn't come out too well.
Also, it's not quiiiiiite in focus - although a gust of wind is another feasible explanation.
Thie former is something I'm working on.

"Don't look at him!"
Another possible candidate for HDR?

Nice start. With practice, you'll pick up all the functions of the camera, a 30D is definitly a good starting camera if you want to take photography seriously. A little advice now, composition is key, so I recommend looking into studding that a little. I spend countless hours studying other peoples photos in magazine, the web, advertisements etc...

With the bird shot, as with most animal photos, the eyes should be the key focal point.

I like the sound exchange shot. I think HDR will ruin the shot however. If you can get your hands on Lightroom, you can control the levels (actually you can do it in PS as well if you have a copy). It will allow you to lighten dark areas and darken the lighter areas a little. Be carefully with the levels function however as it is easy to over cook it.
