OK, so can anybody tell me what fish this is? All I know is that it is too strange!

Off the top of my head, I'd say it's a cuttlefish. W#hatever it is, it's definitely an evolutionary throwback.

It's got the front end of a cuttle fish, but how about the rest?!!?

EDIT: The scary things are it's eyes! Not like a fish at all. Although sharks do have similar peepers. Actually, maybe it's some kind of juvenille shark, there's hundreds of species out there.

Nope. This is a cuttlefish:

As for that thing, I don't know what the hell it is. I thought it was a squid at first glance though...

My guess is that it's a type of shark that lives at very deep depths, hence the almost translucent skin, large eyes and the nose that is obviously developed for some special purpose.

Looks like he has a sucker for a mouth, so I guess he's a bottom feeder or one of those fish that acts like a parasite.

EDIT: The more I look, the more I think it's a bottom feeder. The nose is probably to dig around in the sand with.

If I'm not mistaken, modern fish do not have the pair of fins near the tail that this fish does, which suggests it is an ancient design, as has been mentioned already.

That makes me think that maybe we didn't come from the water, but perhaps something went from land to water. Eventually the back legs weren't needed and stopped being replicated.

A different take on evolution (:

Well, one thing that would help is... where'd you get the image? Was it a fish you caught, or is it from a website?

Well the nose looks slightly serated(spelling?)or maybe its just a gare. i think if it was benthos(bottom dwelling) it would have a flatened out tail and would be more like a stingray. i would definatly have pissed my pants if i cought that!:odd:  :odd:

damn that thing gets uglier everytime I open this topic....

How often to you see fish other than sharks with eyes that black? ...... starting to think it's a predator of some sort.

did someone say "squid"?, the front looks like a squid at first quick look but ive never seen anything like it before :odd:

Just looking at the score-marks on the chopping board it doesn't seem to be more than 4 inches long. Scaaaaa-ry.

It look's like it's from the world's deepest water area, I forget where and what's it's called. Isn't that Chopping Board, kinda big? Or is the Fish just small...?

Challenger Deep in the Mariana's Trench.

It's too fish-like to be a real deep one, IMO.

Nessie's Little Brother? My only guess. The wife has no clue either.

Photoshopped image?

Doesn't look like a shopped pic, but it could be I guess. My Godfather's daughter is a marine biologist, I'll send the picture to her and see what she thinks.

O_o what the ****?????
omg... that thing looks >.< scary. it's so strange. Id also say that its an inhabitant of the deepest of the oceans. it might use those rear... erm, things :odd: to "walk" around the sea floor, and that nose to dig trough the sand, as someone pointed out. still. incredible. where did you find that, chaser?

Cano

:odd:

It looks like a photoshop image to me. It looks like somebody took a shrimp and put a octopus on it for a nose, some fins for it's flippers and the tail looks like it came from an opossum.

If it's real, it just might be a prawn. Those things can get a little freaky looking. Especially the prawns in Asia.

That's no prawn, Solid. Prawns are crustaceans and therefore have a hard(ish) exo-skeleton and legs. This ones bones are definately on the inside and there ain't no sign of legs.

EDIT: I'm guessing that this thing is some kind of newly discovered species/subspecies that died and floated up, or was trawled by some deep water nets. It wouldn't be suprising if it was previously undiscovered, there's plenty of unknown things down there. I mean, no-one's ever seen a live giant squid and if you've seen The Blue Planet: The Deep, then you'll know that there's a lot of weird and woderful stuff that isn't in any wildlife books. Its skin also looks similar to that of a cuttlefish with manipulative pigmentation.

I agree with Cano, that those fins look as if they've evolved into some kinds of primitive 'legs' for 'walking' along the ocean floor.

By the way, I just got the picture in my inbox last night, and haven't had a chance to speak to the person who sent it to me.
