The eruption at Eyjafjallajökull volcano is causing a volcanic ash cloud to spread across Northern Europe which has grounded all non emergancy flights but may result in some spectacular sunsets.

"The ash is likely to lead to particularly red sunsets in some areas"

I'll keep an eye out but I'm not best situated to get a good photo of the sunset and my camera is a point and shoot...and I'm not an expert photographer. Even so hopefully I'll have some photos worth posting here tomorrow.

If anyone else has a good sunset and gets some photos please post back here too.

Cheers

Neal

Yup. Means "Glacier of the island mountains" (literally - eyja is island, fjoll is mountain and jokull is glacier).

Of course the big worry is that most eruptions here in recent times have been precursors to a proper go from Katla...

I should add that I've been past Eyjafjallajökull to Skogafos and Selfoss :D

Ye know too much!

After a bit of googling I agree it would be a very big worry if Katla erupted. Its last major eruption in 1918 lasted 24 days but in 1755 it erupted for approx 120 days...Iceland isn't having much luck recently!

On a lighter note is Topgear still filming at the erupting volcano in Iceland? It may end up being more exciting than they had hoped.

not so much fun for me, I'm stuck in Zurich and cant fly to the UK, although its tomorrow night so hope its better but not looking good.

Well for now there's nothing to be seen in the skies over here. Earlier today my friend went "Look, it's the ash!" while it turned out to be a guy just smoking underneath a window

Harsh mate but if it's any consolation you are potentially avoiding this!

@ Bram – let me know if your friend comes out with any more gems

Well it was bright red here, I got some shots that I'll upload shortly 👍

Usually we get lovely sunsets here in Lincolnshire, but not today sadly. Was all clouded over. :(

Wasn't all that impressive down here, the sun was a deep red but the spread wasn't so good.

Yeah there wasn't that much of a spread as such, it was just a really nice colour. It's nearly impossible to capture the colour though due to the fact that it's, well....the sun.

If it's still around tomorrow I'll be more prepared!

You know what they say, "Red sky at night, cancel your flight"

None too spectacular here, but a lovely clear night for once anyway...

No amazing sunset here either, what an anticlimax

Maybe tonight will be better or maybe it's an excuse for the pilots to have some time off!

EDIT: Looks like Denmark is getting most of it but planes are grounded in the UK until Saturday morning at the earliest...sorry Sprite :(

We had nice sunsets here in Holland... They also cancelled all flights, so there were roughly 2000 people stuck at the airport... Plucked some pics from one of the Dutch news sites...

You're here to talk about sunsets but nobody cares about me being stuck here in Northern Italy... Þakka þú mjög mikill, Íslandi!

To be honest they look like any other sunset you get in the year.

Agreed.
The bottom of the cloud is like miles high.
And 20 miles up the road from Moglet has been nice and sunny all day.

I've lived here for 21 years and the sun has never been that red at that height in the sky from my house. Even when I've watched the sun go down on the coast it's been a dark orange, but never fully red like that. It's definitely different or I wouldn't have bothered taking the photos.

I care mate but there are worse places to be stuck.... ;)

Nice shots Moglet 👍 I must admit the sunsets here have been nothing special at all here so I guess you have to be in the right place.

So some airlines are doing test flights because they don't hold any faith with the Met Office and they're losing too much money waiting around.

This could be interesting...

It's turning into a bit of a nightmare really. The MotoGP in Japan next weekend has been postponed and my Auntie and Uncle are due to come to the UK on Thursday but have been told that won't be happening. I'm due to go to Skiathos on 7th May for 2 weeks which will be my first proper holiday in 3 years, needless to say I am very interested in how this develops as well as the pretty sunsets!

...may move this to the rumble strip.

I must say it looked very pretty when I was driving up on Friday. Certainly brightened up the A1 a little.
