Volvo go absolutely insane with the C30 Polestar

It's a shame not many others can be arsed to make a 4WD hot hatch, for example the Ford Focus RS500. I don't see what's so great about it. It has 350hp going through the front wheels. I want to see more original ideas than car makers seeing how much horsepower they can put through the front wheels. The only 4WD hot hatch that I know of is the Golf R. There should be way more 4WD hot hatches, and I'd like to see the Clio V6 return too.

Make it not baby blue and I'd be all over it. For some reason I don't like baby blue on any car but I do enjoy they made it some other colour then black or white like more tuner cars.

I wonder how many people would buy one just because it's a hot Volvo and that's kind of an oxymoron.

I'm thinking a lot.

Judging by the 240 Turbo wagon thread, I think very few. Not that it would matter to me. I'd rock one.

And how many hot hatches have over 300 hp and FWD?

Sounds pretty original to me.

The problem with AWD and the hot hatch formula is weight. Modern hot hatches are already porky buggers, pushing out 1.3-1.4 tons. AWD adds another tenth of a ton to that, giving you a curb weight of about 1.4-1.5 tons... which makes them very heavy. Weight has always been Ford's excuse for the RS, but for the second generation car, which is porky as hell, it's an especially fitting excuse.

Personally? I'd like to see a FWD hot hatch with 'just' 200 hp, but a curb weight of around 1,000 kilograms.

Finally some info and clips about this car... Read about it a while ago, but hadnt seen any clips... Should be a good match for the New Subaru Impreza Cosworth STi CS400... That thing does 0-60 in 3.7... :O But nonetheless I like this Volvo... color and everything else is SPOT on! 👍

Just a video of Polestar's pre-season testing.

They won last year's season of STCC and is currently leading the champoinship. I really hope they'll eventually make it to the WTCC because I think they have great potential, and wouldn't it be great if Rickard Rydell returned to the seat of a Volvo?

Back on topic, Volvo need to realize the PCP would be great for the brand of Volvo, and they should really give Polestar the support to make at least a couple of hundred of these small, baby blue, wild things.

Worth remembering that twenty years ago the ballpark was about 120bhp and about 850-900kg... I wonder if modern hot hatches are 100% more fun as well as 100% more powerful? I suspect not.

Generally they're about 100% more likely to torque-steer you into a tree.

...with ESP switch off, of course.

I couldn't help chuckling at Autoblog's Horsepower scale thing they put up today. Apparently the average HP 'for passenger cars' is 247. I wonder which country that mean was taken in... My guess is Britain is still hovvering around 110/120 and still doing just fine.

There's no problem anymore nowadays with so much power on the front wheels. There are already a couple of tuned Ford Focus RS with over 400 HP on the front wheels alone. The Gas Scirocco that won it's class in the 24h on the Nürburgring is also FWD and there are rumors that it has over 400 HP too.

It'll depend on your definition of fun. There's no doubt that today's hot hatches are supremely capable, shtongkingly fast and incredibly grippy... but if your tastes lean towards the worship of zero inertial and light-footed agility... sadly... you'll have to look at today's crop of "warm" hatches... or even the "lukewarm" stuff... for your fix.

I think it's telling that quite a few of us in the local motoring community have been thinking about opening up a microcar cup, with a displacement limit of 1,000ccs or thereabouts. Compared to the huge bulk of cars like the Civic... or even the new Fit... the Hyundai i10 and the Suzuki A-Star/Celerio feel incredibly immediate. I'm still dreaming of selling a few of our older vehicles and buying and turbocharging an i10. :D

Depends on how aggressive the diff is... With an open diff or a loose LSD with equal length half-shafts, torque steer isn't a huge issue for many modern cars... though mine torque steered as stock, with just 142 hp...

We've really come a long way... though it's taken other manufacturers a long time to get to the point where Isuzu was back at the start of the 90's with the Impulse and its equal-length half-shafts and perfect balance.

I guess they're considering all the models, rather than the volume of each sold.

Heh I think this is gonna be the most expensive and the fastest hot hatch in the world. 0-60 in 4.6 seconds that's almost as fast as 911!

But I wonder how much would it cost .. I guess somethin' like 40-55k dollars

It's basically a chip+turbo Focus ST with AWD, but also with a nicer interior and far less chavvy exterior. I'd say RS but that has the trick front suspension.

A highish price point would be a good thing as well... Proper enthusiast car.
