I would put this in the questionable mods thread, but this is in a different league! The engine is supposed to be outputting 1350bhp.

The same person has also added 2 to his wife's scooter.

What exactly is fake about it?

How can a jet engine, that needs loads of air, get enough from the inside of a beetle?

From the other thread
TheWizard
I call bs on the jet powered VW Beetle.

A jet engine like that, especially with an afterburner, needs massive amounts of air flow. If that wasn't enough, the compressor and the turbine are completely exposed to the air, therefore making them completely useless. A compressor needs to be encased, else it won't compress anything.

The nozzle, also, looks like it's not sturdy enough and it's even slit open down at the bottom.

That "jet engine" is just for "shows" and all it does is putting flames out the back.

Also, notice how, in all the shots where the "engine" is running, the car is completely stationary. Jet engines put out thousands of pounds of thrust, expecially when the afterburner is running. No way, if that was real, the brakes could keep the car from moving. They may be able to lock the wheels, but the car would still be sliding forward.

Sorry, dude. Your ME degree at Stanford is obviously total bs. Go play with real cars...

Im just curious how TheWizard says the "the compressor and the turbine are completely exposed to the air"

I don't see it, all I see is a jet turbine that has no cowling.

Okay, I agree that this concept may not be capable of actual movement, but this car does exist, and the thing in the back is a turbine. That's real enough for me.

I agree, the compressor and turbine are not exposed, you can actually see the compressor fins enclosed in the jet behind the mesh grill at the front of the engine. The turbine fins which sit just before the exhaust in a jet engine are also totally conceiled. I am no engineer but i have a pretty sound knowledge of how a jet engine works about all the parts which make it work. Id say this is a real jet engine. As for it having an afterburner then maybe not as you cant see any of the injectors which add fuel into the unburnt oxygen just before the exhaust causing the extra thrust and increasing efficiency. Afterburners are not essential just a way off increasing thrust. As for keeping the car still with the engine on, well i have seen quads with jet engines on them and they had no trouble keeping still unless large amounts of throttle were applied. The VW is probably just a show piece albeit a very functional and fully working show piece due to the fact that there are no parachutes that i can see which would be needed to aid slowing down should the driver be brave enough to give it full beans.

Does it work and is it real? - I say yes but i wouldnt go so far to say that i CAN be used.

Spec

PS i could be wrong :sly:

Same here.

I guess the heat generated would be very hot for the cockpit too, or am I wrong?

It is possible that the turbine could move the car by turning the wheels, instead of using thrust. It is -after all- an engine.

*edit* I just watched the vid and the car does squat forwards when the burner is on, so it is providing a fair bit of thrust.

we have a van that has the same deal as this. It has some decent thrust as it blows a lot of fire behind it and generates a lot of wind. However the van locks is wheels and doesnt get pushed forward. So it may not be as powerful as a proper jet?, What about the jetcars, they can have the brakes locked and the jet doesnt move them forward. Same goes for jumbo's before takeoff.

That would be the Donut King van. It's a real jet and it does really push the van, however they only use it for displays and to burn other cars. A couple of years ago (or was it last year?) they used the flames to destroy a Mr Whippy ice cream van.

They added a rocket onto the back of a Mini in Top Gear aswell poor thing :(.

I think the jet is there for show, anyway, theyre are'nt going to be many place in the world where you could blast a jet engine and stop without getting crushed into a wall.

Open the freakin' damn window!

Yeah it's a poor excuse. He's spent so much time getting the damn thing in there, surely sticking two fat ducts from a rally-style roof scoop will sort things out(?)

I can't believe the guy put his hand near the exhaust. He didn't even flinch....that stuff should be wicked hot.
