What is it with 20 year old VWs still being produced in the developing world? Aren't they still making MkI Golfs down in South Africa?

Because, simply put, they were some of the best cars Volkswagen ever made. If VW in North America could sell me an MKI or MKII GTI for $10K out the door with a warranty, I'd consider it. They're built better, last longer, and in all honesty aren't that much slower than the cars that are out there today... Particularly the 123 BHP MKII GTI...

Those are cars I would really love to have. They just seem to have that character that newer cars can't match. Maybe I'd get my parents to get that 2.0T FSI Passat and go find them a V6.....

Nigh impossible. The engine is a water-cooled F-4 behind the rear axle. You'd have better luck with a Subaru or Porsche engine.

This is the oddest automotive joint venture of this decade: It falls somewhere between the Honda Passport and the Dodge Omni. I'm no hardcore-VW-fan but this is just wrong-looking on so many levels that I might need psychiatric help.

Then again, if VW is left to make a van, they think of the smallest engine they can install in it, and then those crafty Wolfsburg engineers mysteriously cut the power output in half again before putting it in the van. It's engine power origami!

Then again, if VW is left to make a van, they think of the smallest engine they can install in it, and then those crafty Wolfsburg engineers mysteriously cut the power output in half again before putting it in the van. It's engine power origami!

It would be better than Chrysler providing the engines. That VW 2 liter is pushing out more power than the Chrysler 3.8 V6.

-> I would think so too, but although the VW engine gathers more power the 3.8L has a lot more torque and aside from that, it has a very different engine mountings. VW doesn't want to invest more money on a vehicle that will be exclusive only on the North American maket, that would be a waste. Plus, american-styled minivans proved to be a waste of money in Europe.

I thought the Chrysler Voyager sold moderately well in Europe? I think they're sending the Town and Country (Voyager) back there again, one hopes that it can have similar "success" in the market...

^ The Chrysler Voyager proves to be 'too big and bulky' for Euro roads back then. But I hope the CRD and Stow-N-Go would lift its sales somewhat. Otherwise it would end up as a failure then the Journey will replace that.
