"w00t" crowned word of year by U.S. dictionary

BOSTON (Reuters) - "w00t", an expression of joy coined by online gamers, was crowned word of the year on Tuesday by the publisher of a leading U.S. dictionary.

Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster said "w00t" -- typically spelled with two zeros -- reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and mobile phone text-messaging.

It's like saying "yay", the dictionary said.

"It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all," Merriam-Webster said.

Visitors to Merriam-Webster's Web site were invited to vote for one of 20 words and phrases culled from the most frequently looked-up words on the site and submitted by readers.

It was also today's Urban Dictionary's word of the day. Coincidence? Maybe, but they didn't mention the M-W addition. I think it is kind of stupid.
 
I really wish they wouldn't encourage stuff like that. Its fine when you use it on the net but once you throw words like that into your everyday conversations then its being taken to far. IMO.

Of all the words, it had to be w00t. Well i can't complain, its a very addictive word.... :lol:

This is killing me.

It is bad enough that some schools are starting to let this crap slide. In my job we transcribe news segments. I have had to let a couple of new people go because they have horrible English skills and many words are spelled in some kind of weird text speak or just odd spellings that I cannot fathom someone using. The really sad thing is that one of these people had a college degree.


If we begin to accept this kind of thing into everyday speech usage I may have to shoot myself.

I use it in conversion from time to time with my friends but I don't think I would ever go w00t! if my boss told me he was giving me a raise or something.
 
I always though it came from Futurama.
Zoidberg yells wootwootwootwoot when he's happy or excited :)

is use noob more in real life than any other word with internet origin.
(mostly when someone in my class makes a stupid mistake)

That would be a classic moment nonetheless - Especially if you could make really big cartoon eyes and drop your jaw to the floor at the same time :-)

My partner and I use "w00t", "ROFL" and "O HAI"/"O RLY" all the time. And we're both sane, sort-of-professional, educated people.


Injects a little levity into life. Though I find I have to keep explaining things I say to friends/relatives who don't have an internets.

I say LOL "lawl" but only in a humorous context. Thankfully it hasn't slipped out on accident. Yet.

I've also been known to use "win" and "phail" in the classroom, to kids...
 
So, if you typed a mistake or said something wrong, you could use:

O HAY GUISE. w00t r in ur dicshunairies being offishal.


It was great in AP English hearing people say OMG WTF after getting a higher score than they thought they would on an English exam.

The poor spelling is taking a toll on people. I think today's youth has forgotten that the english word to address someone in the second tense also has a y and an o in it. They also don't seem to understand that contractions need apostrophes and that the word 'what' does not contain the letter u.
 
I can't wait until they put lol in the dictionary so they'll have to put lulz and lawl in as well :D

I don't quite see this as a good thing either. I love 1337 speek, and I use it all the time between my fellow gaming friends, but once it gets into the dictionary and everybody starts using it, it's going to become annoying as hell *face palm*
 
my brothers a moron he actually says all the time. lawl, roffal at any chance....

I used to use w00t at school with classmates but not since i went into the "big wide workforce"
 
I use "w00t" quite often at work actually. At the same time, "pwned" has been a more common word as well.

Great.
 
I once said "owned" really loud after a guy got whacked with a cricket bat in the nutz, and then everyone said it after a while, and bagged me for saying it :irked: The net is really getting into my life :(
