I use "w00t" quite often at work actually.
Stop, please stop.

It is bad enough that somehow smilies and emoticons became common place in work emails. I have slowly begun to see lol popping up in emails where people apologize for a silly mistake.

Anyone can see that I type non-words and even some text/l33t words on here, but at work I am anal about making sure everything I send out is very professional. If it goes to our corporate offices I have at least one other person look over it first.

And after all this ranting I have to admit I said "for the win" to a co-worker this morning.....but it was a non-work related conversation and he is my after work drinking/gaming friend.

Secretly, I blame all of you.

I do the same thing. I double check the email recipient and double and triple check spelling and if I'm sending an attachment I make sure it's the right one. It's amazing how anal you get when you send something to the wrong person.

Or the fact that Outlook has teh Send and Attach buttons side by side so you acidentally send an incomplete email that says "Please see attached" but there is no attachment.

But yeah, when I don't accidentally hit the wrong button I double check everything, run spell check, then have it set to automatically spell check on send.

After it goes out I check my sent mail folder just in case.

But this is all a bit of topic.

I am actually personally full of regret and shame for this. Being part of the Internet generation yet diverging from its customs, I have to say I am really disappointed with this development.

But, life goes on, and I am just one of those people who does this...

The poor spelling is taking a toll on people. I think today's youth has forgotten that the english word to address someone in the second tense also has a y and an o in it. They also don't seem to understand that contractions need apostrophes and that the word 'what' does not contain the letter u.
lol wut

I think this kind of speech is perfectly acceptable in the right context -- ie. with friends, casual chat with coworkers, etc. -- but I would definitely agree that it has no place in formal writing and official business texts/emails.

In any case, text messaging alone doesn't account for all of this new vocabulary. I think we should blame 4--

I love how people try to fight the evolution of a language

True, there's no excuse for a decline in grammar or spelling of easily spelt words, but things like lol and w00t have made their way into many people's vocabularies to the point it just has to be accepted.

I await the day when I grumble about "yuff" culture.

To Webster's credit, they have to wait a few years to see if certain words are still in common usage, or every mis-spelling of a word or short-lived phrase or obscure meaning is going to have an entry.

Don't you think that's totally spam? It's lubricated! Well, I'm phasing.

I've also been known to use "win" and "phail" in the classroom, to kids...

You rock.

Agreed, this has no place in formal language.

I can just keep picturing a spelling bee… w00t, w-zero-zero-t, w00t. Zero!? Ack!

God, it's like that class in college where I had to write programs in hex is coming back to haunt me.
