"Yamauchi wanted to implement a “free roam” gameplay mode in GT5, where players could drive around, respecting speed limits and obeying traffic laws, and even exit the car to walk around and explore the environment on foot."

Wait, so DID Kaz consider implementing a free-roam gameplay mode in Gran Turismo 5 or is it actually going to be added in an update to the game?

If it's the former, I'm pretty sure it'll be saved for Gran Turismo 6. Thoughts?

Seems too much for a simple patch. Must be very labour-intensive to construct.
Then again, if it was mostly finished and is in the game, that might explain where the five years went.

IDK, but I think that would be an awesome feature either way...

Do it! Do it! Do it!

I dunno.. I think GT5 is trying to be too many things as it is, I don't want any new features that don't relate to racing.

If it means more like a track day feature though then I'm all for it.

I'd go for a free-roam mode. That's pretty awesome thing to, you know, relax and chill. It would make more sense as an online mode though.

I don't care about leaving the car, but open environments to drive/drift/drag race around would be cool.

Don't do it PD. Finish the damn game I payed $300 for first.

This is the best way to drive around and take pictures, cruise and relax.

16 car exotic cruise without a set destination? Exit the car to take pictures live?

Why would anyone support that? If GT5 had met the standard expected of it, then maybe consider gimmicks like this for GT6. If they are spending any current resource on GT5, it should be fixing the true GT series side of the game.

The standard expected? If they'd given you a solid gold Ferrari with every purchase it still wouldn't have met expectations, because not everyone likes Ferrari. There's no way it could ever have matched the hype built up around it, regardless of whether or not it's the best racing sim ever put to disc.

It'd be fun for the menu. I can see things like a news stand with used car and race listings, you'd have to drive to the garage to tune it. Your "car garage" would be either a warehouse or a parking garage. Maybe, if you run a red light or something you'd get a ticket. I can even see an ACTUAL car wash and "lube station" And, when you get a new car, a big semi drops it off. If you want a new car, there would be several car dealerships you could go to.

Like people have said though, it's probably too much work for GT5. Perhaps for GT6 or GT7 on the PS4. I would LOVE to see this eventually.

I really hope and wished that this idea goes through. I spent hours in Need For Speed Underground and Midnight Club LA just cursing around and it was loads of fun. Only let down is that it was an arcade game and not really real. Imagine you and your friend in both your dream cars just cruising down the street simulating real life. Most of us have to admit that sometimes we just forget about the race in Gran Turismo and just mess around the track testing out the physics attempting to do donuts and such. The only thing that got in your way was the track barriers. You guys can disagree on this and I'm the only one who doesn't play the game properly at times.

Damn, harsh

I'm totally with you, it's all about the driving, not the racing. I've messed about on tracks plenty of times, going back and forth through cool sections, drifting around open areas, generally just enjoying the car.

GT becomes all about illegal street racing...

I don't think a free roam would be far off really. We already have the ability to walk around in replay mode and photomode to check out the scenery. I don't think it would be much more intensive on the PS3 if we could do those same actions live. We don't need no perfect animations of drivers getting out of the cars and walking around.

Honestly though, I'd prefer to see things like better shadows, new features, new cars, a new track, and other little things like the ability to have more than one car in photomode, and doors opening. Show those interiors off Kaz!

Yes, be cool to drive around on a street with a real car and cruise. But do we need it now, when we have issues with the game? I say not, not now at least.

I really don't think it's possible and would result in GT trying to be too much. The current media just doesn't have the space to include what would be a massive extra section to the game.

I would be open to have 'free drive' complexes, sort of like a test track area or photo mode locations but I'm not so sure about including it as a major feature.

All he said was exactly what you posted, he WANTED free roam.

Everything else its just people jumping to conclusions and assumptions.

I've always wished we could have the ability to walk around our cars in first person view and check out every aspect like IRL. It would be so cool if our garage was a literal garage where we could walk from car to car and open hoods and doors etc....

Finally! Someone else other then my friend who understands me. I liked racing games for the driving portion more then the racing. Just messing around driving is fun. Thank you for wording it out for me

I think Kaz was saying he wanted to implement a free roam into the final game, but due to whatever reason it didnt make it in. Could have been time issues, PS3 resources, who knows. Id like to eventually see it, but theres simply too many other things that need work of higher importance.

HAHAHA, this would be sick. I brought this up awhile back in a thread but i thought that might of been asking for too much. If they implement this feature some how who know's how far they could take it in future GT'S.

I already spend enough time driving the speed limit in real life.

there are so many other things I would want in the game before free roam.

lol Amen. 👍

IMO, we don't need this. At least not right now. The current issues need to be fixed first.

I've got to say, obeying traffic laws in a video game is about as stupid as drifting into walls in real life. Things have their place. For good reason.

The PGR games on Xbox 360 have this, it's pretty cool in all honesty. You can only fit about 7 or so cars in there and you have to place them in set positions, but you get to walk around, play on a Geometry Wars arcade cabinet and take photos.

To hell with that, I would like PD to slowly start swapping out the whole standard car business and release 5-10 premium cars replacing those every update or so (talk about wishful thinking).
