A pretty signficant change was made in 1.20. Now, your car receives mechanical damage much more easily, even innocent wall touches that wouldn't hurt even open-wheelers. I feel like this change was exaggerated. Yes, you should avoid walls, and yes, hitting a wall should never be an advantage, but light touches are sometimes hard to avoid. Especially if you're on controller and struggle to be precise, it's a real issue. Granted, in the races in World Circuits the damage is always temporary.

Yeah, but is it me, i ran Tokyo WTC 600 last night and it feels like time penalties are less strict, because i did not get any penalties, where as i usually get one or two.

I'd be okay with them dropping it or toning it down for singleplayer races if most people don't like it, but it should 1000% stay for Sport Mode at least, as having your car get heavily damaged is a much needed punishment for dangerous driving.

Not tried sport mode yet, so long as it doesn't damage your car too much for being taken out. It will be a good thing.

No... this is a terrible quote along with the no longer a gap one from Senna... Motorsport is a no contact sport, you obviously didn't watch the Racing Etiquette "WHAT IS SPORTSMANSHIP?" video in GT7
PD must've gotten it wrong...I've seen and received contact in Sport mode quite often!

In some cases, vibration feedback (very very) very lightly, I've found the contact damage exaggerated ...

the resistance is futile .. buy MTX

I've read this was aimed at stopping wall riders and reducing purposeful contact in Sport Mode. It certainly makes you take more care when driving in any race where damage is turned on, that's for sure! It's pretty extreme, but it's effective too. I don't mind it.

Well no PD didn't get it wrong, the drivers of those other cars have it wrong, they should be avoiding contact,

Having damage now is a deterrent to make contact and attempt to have cleaner racing, it won't guarantee incidents wont happen but it should be cleaner.

It may be a deterrent in sport mode but not when the single player ai punt you slightly and grazing the kerb/wall/barrier screws your race. There is no penalty for the ai,i dont know how hard it would be for pd to programme to give the ai a penalty, there could be an exclamation mark next to their name so you could see they have been given a penalty, once their penalty has gone the mark next to there name disappears.
I understand the realism thing but damage shouldnt disappear magically it should require a pit stop, but i expect thats quite extensive to add.

It would be nice if they could programme the pit exit at Sardegna so you didn't get shunted exiting the pits by a missile running at 150mph directly into your tailgate...

It already is in the game. Try a custom Race with "Heavy' damage. It's the same as Light but damage is only repaired in the pits!

I think it gives those who are usually very aggressive more to think about. It forces them to be less aggressive and drive more carefully in order to make your way up the field. It would be nice if the AI were penalized for hitting barriers and punting me and other AI, though.

Very true, just had another go tonight. Was being super careful. Was looking at a top 3 at sardenga. Then bish bash bosh, got knocked around like a pinball coming out of pits...lesson of the day..check rear mirrors😁

It’s not really the wall contact damage that has me annoyed and enjoying the game far less after 1.20 went live, but how it was applied in single player mode. Normally I can avoid hitting walls due to excess speed, poor braking or bad approaches at turns, and if I don’t and hit a wall, that’s on me, I accept that. What really bothers me though is how wild AI drives and is seemingly oblivious to the fact other cars are on the track with them at times. This is essentially out of my control unless I just want to drive far behind them the entire race and finish last. They constantly hit each other, causing accidents right in front of or beside me that I get caught in or hit me directly on the tighter, technical tracks and sometimes it’s almost as if intentional as there is no valid reason for them to swerve at me when they do. Perhaps it’s time to drop from Hard difficulty and back down to Easy where the AI is supposed to be less aggressive? But then the races won’t even be anywhere close so that’s not much fun either.
The first 2-3 laps of Sardegna, for example, are a constant deal with damage from being run into by AI or having the damage to one area fix itself and then I subsequently run into a wall because now I’m no longer needing to correct a steering issue that magically vanishes mid turn with no warning so I tap a wall and the damage cycle starts all over again.
This part of the update should not have been implemented in single player mode without an update to make the AI much better than it is. Online lobbies, yes, fully support this update to aid in punishing bad drivers looking to play demolition derby, but single player with the current AI? Not a good experience.
This new damage has effectively ruined single player enjoyment for a lot of races. I no longer enjoy a lot of tracks such as Tokyo or Sardegna, which previously was my favorite track. I find myself only racing Le Mans now as that track you can avoid all of the **** AI and the damage that results from them and still get a good payout. So much for PD doing things to prevent people from grinding the same race over and over again and making them want to enjoy all of the tracks and cars in the game.

Would be nice if we had different damage levels for each track.

I've been doing Tokyo 600 almost exclusively for quite a while now. Any hit, literally any hit, is enough to damage the car. It's... not very fun.

Before 1.20 update, if I hit any wall with just 1mm with my front bumber, for 0.001 seconds, I could go on like nothing happened. Just a scratch, visually represented.

Now the same situation results in damage for bumpers and wheels. I'm not even talking about pushing too hard. Literally just a little graze from any hit and bam, damaged.

If this is realistic or not, I don't know, but I'll say this is not fun. Not fun at all, it's just annoying. Very annoying.

I think it does make sense for Sport Mode, for tracks that are very wide and/or open, but I don't think it's a good design for street circuits in Singleplayer.

I agree its probably needed in sport mode but not so harsh in single player,a proper whack should damage the car but not as @Arkseven says just a fraction of a rub.Can you imagine if BTCC applied the same damage IRL when the drivers rubbed each other,it would be carnage.

On the Tokyo 600 event I’ve found they dish out 5 second penalties (which can be race ending) less often. The increased damage has forced me to improve my lines.

It would be pretty cool if wheel damage resulted in tyre smoke. Replicating bodywork rubbing on the wheel. Likewise dumping an oil trail if you seriously damage the engine.

These would also work as visual cues if racing against real people.
