Wanting to upgrade my HDD on my PS3

Ok, so I have the old, fat, PS3. An 80 GB to be exact, the Motorstorm Bundle. I'm running out of room, and I want to know about transfering my data to a new HDD.

I know that my PSN will be safe, as long as I deactivate the Game and Video portion of my account. I'm worried about all of my game data. Some of it I can't copy, even to a different sector of my PS3.

If anybody can help, it'd be much apreciated. I'm wanting to get a 160+ GB HDD, 500 GB would be ideal.

Thanks,
scooter1265

PS: If anybody knows how to reset a Motorola Droid to out-of-the-box, you can send me a private message.

Plenty of instructions for the hard drive can be found here.

As for the Droid:
  • Turn the Droid off. If it won’t turn off, take the battery out then place it back in.
  • Open the keyboard and press the X key while pressing and holding Power. The device will power on. Keep holding the buttons down until a yellow triangle appears.
  • Press the Camera and Volume Up buttons at the same time to get to the menu. (I had to press them several times).
  • Use the direction pad to the right of the keyboard to select the Format option.

I have checked newegg and it seems that this drive is the largest that you can fit in your PS3. You can't fit the 1TB models into a PS3 since they are too thick to fit. The 1TB has a 12.5mm thickness and the 750GB that I have linked to has an 9.5mm thickness. Which is a perfect fit for the PS3's HDD cradle. Here's an 500GB model if you really just want the 500GB HDD.

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned this about my Droid.

I have SirPsycho system recovery on it, so its not stock system recovery. If I could remove that, I'd be good. I just don't know what the file name is.

I found a Western Digital 320 GB 2.5" SATA HDD on newegg.com for $44.99. Any objections?

I can't find the HDD for that price on newegg but I have found a faster 320GB since it has a 16mb cache and runs at 7200RPM. Which means the PS3 will be able to load games and media a bit faster. If you consider the price worth it then get the 320GB that I linked to. If not then just stick with your find since that is a great find on your part with the price unless the reviews are bad of course. I'd recommend the rating for 5 stars to be near 80% of all of the reviews(feedback tab on all products).

Faster, and therfore hotter, drives may not be a good idea in the PS3. When I upgraded mine, I stayed with a 5400rpm drive.

Ditto for the same reason....if you're feeling really rich you could get a SSD although I'm not sure a few seconds of anyone's time is worth the cost.

Im thinking this one. It's a pretty good one for the price, and it's not too much money.

Also, how can I transfer over all of my game data and update data. The update data really doesn't matter, but it'd be nice instead of downloading updates for the 30+ games/demos/trials that I have.

As I understand it, the trophies, downloads from the PlayStation Store, and your friends are all stored on your PSN account. That should transfer over after I deactivate my old PS3, right?

To transfer all of the files just follow these instructions. Just follow the first instruction that page and will you be able to keep all of your data. I'm pretty sure updates do come with the backup and yes the PSN information will transfer to the new PS3.

@Toronado: He's doing this so he won't lose his data. Launch 60GB models tend to have problems over the years and might ylod. So it's just a precaution.

But he doesn't have a launch model, and up until his last post he made no mention of him even replacing his PS3. Unless I missed something, he started this thread strictly asking for help with upgrading the hard drive in his PS3. Not replacing his PS3 with another one.

Ehhhh? I must of got confused with another topic.

EDIT: Yes I did get confused with another topic so ignore my last post.

The reason I have to deactivate my PS3 is because I already have 5 systems activated. I can't take it down to 3, because one of the accounts was on my faulty PSP.

But, I can take it down to 4.

That's right.
I have a WD 7200rpm and 90% of the time it works but sometimes the ps3 doesn't recognize it because the speed of the ps3 and hdd won't syncronize at the launch.
Take a 5400rpm and you are on the safe side

That sounds like a faulty drive. I know someone who has a Kingston V+ Series in his PS3, and he has never had any problems with it. I have a WD 7200 RPM drive in my triple, and I've never encountered any problems with it. I would still, however, suggest using a 5400 RPM drive. There is little performance benefit to using a 7200RPM drive in a PS3 (with exceptions), it would be cheaper, and the increased temperatures aren't worth it.

Wait, lets go at this from the start: Is the PS3 that you want to upgrade currently activated to your PSN account? And, as an aside, do you still have your PSP?

ok it's more like 1% of the start up that don't work.
But i phoned with sony and that was their answer : certain drives don't sync on start up due to different speeds.
But it's very rare and solved with a restart.
i tought about changing it but as it is very rare i honestly don't care
