War Movies

Of all the war movies I have seen so far, I really can't find one that doesn't glorify Americans or for that matter that movie's origin country. Sometimes I really can't stand patriotism, I think it divides man kind, it makes people think they can change the way history happened, just to make their country look better. And most of all, it makes for really bull**** movies. Does anyone know any good war movies?

Haven't you realize that it just might, just a little bit, be the truth?

Good war movies:

Band of Brothers
Tora Tora Tora!
All Quiet on The Western Front
Midway
Thin Red Line
The Big Red One
Memphis Belle
The Tuskegee Airmen
Blackhawk Down

Kind of war movies, but not really:

Top Gun
Red Dawn
Schindler's List

Now my question: Does anyone know of a good Vietnam film?

I think in war patriotism plays a very large part in real life, your putting your life on the line for your country and it's ideals, thats patriotism. I don't like patriotism though, I'd rather dedicate myself to my own cause than that of the prime minister.

It doesn't bother me that much.

Here's some I like:

Saving Private Ryan
Thin Red Line
Tora Tora Tora
Hell In Pacific
Tigerland
Apocalypse Now
Three Kings

My oddball favorites:

First Blood
Commando

RFTurismo
I was going to say that. Thats my favorite one! Plus Full Metal Jacket.
Doh! And I forgot the great "Full Metal Jacket". :ouch: I think the actor's name is Lee Ermey. What an actor!

For a "war movie" to be any good, there has to be some ethno-centrism.

I liked The Green Berets- even though I'm not much of a John Wayne fan.

Good Morning, VietNam was also quite good.

I loved Midway.

I'm also partial to The Dirty Dozen and M*A*S*H

Granted, M*A*S*H, was about the Korean war, but was really an anti-war, anti-VietNam commentary.

Platoon is a pretty good movie. I don't know how much of it is entirely true, but definately worth a watch. 👍

You know what would be nice, a movie in which they explore the events that occured on all 4 beaches instead of just the american ones. Saving Private Ryan was a bunch of bull****. What I'm mainly talking about is the fact that there are now non americans in it!!!!!! Besides the germans of course, who are depicted more like targets, than actual human beings in the movie. American came into the war late and yet these movies make it seem as if world war 2 was all about america. I know american film companies are trying to attract americans, but I think other nations deserve recognization for their efforts, and shouldn't be pushed aside by americanization.

p.s. I heard that some actor left the us because his son was taught that ww2 started in 1941 when this is actually when the us joined. That's bull.

How about We Were Soldiers?

Which actor is this? His son must've gone to a dumb ****ing school. And he moved to another country over that?? Wow.

By the way, I thought Black Hawk Down was excellent.

When I was growing up in Japan, there was this weekly movie special, where they showed war movies. Many of them were movies about WWII and the good guys, while not in literal sense, a lot of times were Japanese and German. Perhaps in Germany/Italy/Japan, their movies doesn't depict Axis troops as human "targets".

I think your criticism on Hollywood is uncalled for. What is wrong with Americans making war movies that tells their story? Every countries should have the right to make whatever war movies they want. If the rest of the countries that belonged to the Allied Forces want to make a movie telling their side of the story, then by all means they should.

Not to mention a movie "in which they explore the events that occured on all 4 beaches instead of just the american ones" would be ridiculously long and expensive to make.

Ouch, don't think so. Platoon was directed by Oliver Stone, whos public statements include:

"They control culture, they control ideas. And I think the revolt of September 11th was about '**** you! **** your order!"

I doubt that a man with this mental instability has the knowledge to direct any movie correctly. I'm sure it was an entertaining movie, but I'm looking for a factual Vietnam movie.

I'm going to check out We Were Solders, it looks like a pretty good movie.

I might have similar taste in music with tabs, but apparently not in war movies. I didn't like Black Hawk Down or We Were Soldiers. :p Only reason I bought Black Hawk Down on DVD was because I thought for sure they couldnt screw up a movie like that, and Ewan McGregor was in it. :D Very popular movie, but me no likee.

Viper Zero: If you are looking for (realistic)Vietnam War movies, I'd like to recommend Tigerland and Full Metal Jacket. Also, there was this series I used to watch called "Tour of Duty", which recently came out on DVD, I believe. I didn't understand English back then, so I don't know exactly how good the show was, but should be pretty good.

Oliver Stone is not one of my favorite directors or anything, but he did direct "JFK". 👍

What about The Deerhunter?

I know it has gathered alot of criticism for the ending being overly patriotic, but for a film that primarily deals with the negative aspects of the Vietnam war, I wouldn't say it glorifies the U.S. at all...

I remember that one, with Walken and DeNiro. It was very dark(especially towards the end), if I remember correctly. Walken was scary, like more than usual. :D

Yes, it's a horrendously depressing film, but I love it :D

And at over 3 hours long, it takes a bit of effort... it's split into three sections... the first third being the send-off and wedding of one of the guys going to Vietnam. The middle bit is when they are in Vietnam (and the infamous 'Russian Roulette' scene(s)) and the last third is the aftermath. Walken, De Niro and Meryl Streep are all fantastic, all nominated for Oscars, but only Walken actually got one. The film got best film and best director though... 👍

Try this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056197
All 6 beaches and the airborne landings :D

Saving private Ryan wasn't a film about D-day, it was a story about a group of American soildiers where D-day was part of their story, so at no point was there any need to mention other allied nations. :)

:indiff: ok....not very strong imagination huh.

Ok, what I'm saying is that when I learnt this stuff in school you learnt how the war began etc. They taught us how Britian, France, Russia all the countries fought so hard against the germans. I was thinking wow how cool is it to see such co operation between countries(besides the axis powers). And a movie showing this would be so much better than any dedication to troops. Face it there has been so many movies on how valiant the solidiers were. I think someone should just make a movie about all efforts from all the countries, even germany. They could even make it a trilogy or whatever.

I think it's just a shame that the US's strength in the entertainment industry completely shadows the efforts of the countries that fought just as hard and longer than the US did.

Also I think Hitler did a crazy job getting Germany up on it's feet again, but too bad he was a psycho. THEY LOST A WORLD WAR! And still came back to fight the whole world again!

Hitler: last ten days, was on today:dopey: . Sorry about the america bashing boys, but I had to get that outta my system. Apocalyse Now was a great war movie.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to watch that DVD again. I have the "Redux" version, which is 49 minutes longer. 👍 "Larry" Fishburne as a young skinny kid cracks me up everytime.

I saw the "Redux" in the theater, and that was the last time I saw this movie. I said "watch that DVD again", but actually, I still haven't watched the DVD after the whole time I owned it.

I can't remember this "surfer" dude. Is that the one that stuck an arrow on his headband or something?

Haha, yeah he is. The acting in this movie was solid. Marlon Brando really made me feel weird cause I just saw him in the Godfather a little while before seeing this.
