Was I right in defending this way?

I jumped from 3rd to 1st by skipping fuel at the single pitstop (12lap race at Big Willow), but then had to save fuel a lot in the last lap as I was caught by the guy in 2nd. Around the minute mark is a near collision, I felt I showed I wanted the inside and from there didn't steer into him, rather the track going left. Then again, he had to get off the gas to avoid collision. (Huge kudos to him for not tapping into the back of me BTW)

Did I race fair?

You're not going straight to the apex. In fact you would go off track hadn't you turn to the inside. He was trying to overtake you on the inside and you can make a defensive move to the inside. I just think you probably could have done it a bit earlier. It looks like you don't drive with the radar enabled or didn't even see he was there.

Not the radar, but I'm racing on bumpercam with the rear view mirror. I knew exactly where he was, I only figured I still had my rear bumper ahead his front bumper, and that he wouldn't go for that gap. (And some risk, as the race had two corners to go)

Imo you should have defended the inside before he was alongside. He had a run on you, you gave him space at first, but then force him to back off when he is alongside by driving him to the edge with a kink coming up. If he didnt back of you would have forced him off track. Next time defend the inside before someone gets alongside or leave a cars width of space if you are to late for that.

Then I guess:

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear

Is a good punch line for that. :P

Don't trust the rear view mirror to judge if someone is close or not. If you see them, they probably are.

You defended your position with a single change of direction. He wasn't yet along side you (his front wheel wasn't level with your wing mirror).

Fair move 👍

Yup, you should have start deffending your inside sooner, not when he was already next to you.

Very smart of the other guy to brake actually. If I did the same thing, the other guy would just wreck us both but that's just my luck :D

Your move was too late. The other car was already coming up your side when you turned into them.

If you had made the move before he was alongside of you, you would be committed to keeping that line and can't move back to the left.

edit: I re-watched the replays in slow motion and it does look like you are going straight and the road starts to bend. This is actually a really tough call, but I would have to judge it on your position in regards to the racing line and track. Even though you may not have turned into the other car, you didn't allow enough space.

Yes!

I noticed that my opponent in front might be 1.5 seconds ahead while my opponent behind is just 1 second behind, but the one behind looks twice as far away.

I haven’t been using radar, but I’ll definately try it.

I know i'd certainly have messaged the guy to congratulate him for the master clean driving. In any case it does appear you are going for the line just a tad too late so its almost as if shutting him off. Had it been a bit earlier, would have been a very fair race indeed.

First minute is normal clean driving, there wasn't anywhere he could overtake you. Your only mistake was at 1:00 in second video, you sort of cut him off. He could have took inside there and passed you, at same time he could go too inside and you can gain position back.

Compared to real life racing series, that was fine, he wasn't along side you and you moved once. Seen far worse in F1 go unpunished over the years, Mr Verstappen has upset a few top drivers recently with late blocks, but mostly gone unpunished.

The game didn't penalise you either, but if GT had realistic damage modelling it may have been very different with that contact.

Too late. You made your move, but left a gap, when he got beside you, you decided to hold your line rather than give him racing room. You should have moved entirely to the white line/edge of track to prevent any gap being taken advantage of.

Not okay. You should have left a car's width on the outside for him. It's not a valid excuse to push someone out just because the road is turning.

You defended your position with a single change of direction. He wasn't yet along side you (his front wheel wasn't level with your wing mirror).

Fair move 👍

The front wheel doesn't have to be along side the wing mirror. In the FIA Sporting Code, it says that:

manoeuvres liable to hinder other drivers, such as deliberate crowding of a car beyond the edge of the track or any other abnormal change of direction, are strictly prohibited.

A hard call. I would have understood your move the way you meant it. You moved to the middle of the track at the first possible moment ( right after the clip ) and went just straight on from there. If I had been the other driver, I would never ever have tried on the inside knowing the track runs out.
Btw I was a bit astonished about some comments calling him super clean and super courteous ... it's just intelligent avoiding a desaster ( and maybe accepting it wasn't a good decision to move to the inside ).

I's be pretty pissed off if someone did that to me... I wouldn't have pulled out of the pass like he did, I'd have held my line.

You didn't really make a defensive move, you sort of drifted right, but left room, then closed the door when he went for it. Saying you were only going for the inside line to the next corner is false - you drift to the right, close the door, then move back to the left for the long right.

If you're going to defend/block, make 1 clear early move... don't dither.

@Stotty
I get what you ( and other guys ) say. I ask you though ( you're more race experienced than I am ), wouldn't it be right to say : OP makes his move, not a quick one, but right in time, being ahead. You usually stay to the left there, so his move is placing his car in the middle of the track and moving straight on from there in a predictable way. Second place driver has to decide where to go, takes the inside ... with a predictable result ?

He left more than a cars width. Yes the door was closing, but it was a weak move IMO.

If you are going to defend, defend strongly. Make a decision and make the move. Hedging your bets (driving down the middle of the road and waiting to see which way the other driver moves) is beyond irritating and just leads to accidents.

Agreed.
You have to make your intentions clear otherwise it can lead to confusion and collisions.
Great racing can only exist when you and another driver understand each other and can attack/defend without contact.

Everything was on, until the OP forced him off track. I’d be pretty upset if that happened to me. In future OP, use the radar ;)

Might be my lack of English or lack of awareness, but can you tell me where this is the case ? Ready to learn :) ...
