Over the past few hours I have searched high and low and done all i could to try to solve this problem, but to no avail.

Whenever I plug my external in my computer will recognize it, but as an unknown device. In the device status area it says "No drivers are installed for this device.". Along with that, in the drivers tab it has the driver version as 5.1.2600.0 and it's dated to 7/1/2001.

Now, what really shouts that this is a driver problem is not only that, but it will work perfectly fine on my fathers computer and my friends laptop which have both only ran XP, whereas my computer has ran 98, ME, and XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I didn't wait 9 and 1/2 hours for an external that doesn't work with my computer :grumpy:

Now not only that, thanks to microsoft telling me to try and edit parts of the registry, my computer will no longer turn on. It says it can't find autochk.exe, then it restarts over, and over, and over.

What should i do?

The two choices that i' think are my best bet are:

Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory services restore mode (windows domain contollers only)

What should i do? I'd appreciate a quick answer because i really want to get some sleep.

Yup, Last known good config worked well. I ended up just waiting and asking my father.

Still need help with my external problem though

Have you tried getting drivers from the manufacturers website or using device manager to update the driver?

Me
...and done all i could to try to solve this problem.

Yes I have tried that already, the website doesn't offer any drivers for my device either.

What i'm thinking of doing is just copying my dad's computer's drivers and putting them on my computer.

Did you install an upgrade from ME to XP, or a completely clean install of XP?

That is the only thing I can think of, as an update to date version of Windows should require no drivers for a USB External HDD. My Seagate certainly did not.

I upgraded from ME to XP

I've got the 500GB black book and the 250 GB and they connected without any issues to my windows XP, its weird that your having this problem.

Are your USB ports working fine? have you got all the updates installed for Windows XP?

I know that it's obviously a driver problem, and because the upgrade decided that my ME drivers are good enough, I'm going to have to wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of XP.

Not too much of a big deal, my friend has an XP install disk that he is going to let me use. The only thing that's going to be a nuisance is reinstalling programs, especially some of the large and quite pesky programs that I have to 'specially' install.

I also purchased a usb thing, sorry I don't know what it's called, but it has four usb 2.0 ports, so that should help a lot.
